MCLA's Education Department Offers MTEL Preparation Workshops

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Education Department will offer preparation workshops for those considering taking the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) on Oct. 28 and 29.    The workshops will be held in an online, synchronous format, with two sessions each day. The first session will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will cover the test Communication and Literacy, and the second session, held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will focus on Foundations of Reading.     Passing the MTEL is a requirement for teacher licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. North Adams Council OKs Zoning, Earlier Voting

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday delayed an extensive rewrite of the city's taxi ordinance but moved forward on several other ordinance changes and lengthened the time for voting on election day.    The council approved to start voting in the city election two hours earlier, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.   Council President Lisa Blackmer brought up the change, saying a number of citizens had spoken to her about not being able to vote before going to work. North Adams' Rally for Recovery Highlights Need for Community Support

Rebecca Dodge has been named director of the new peer recovery support center in North Adams.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Approximately 75 people braved the wind and rain Saturday to attend the Rally for Recovery — a resource fair, speakers' forum and standout.   The goal of the annual event, previously Voices for Recovery, is to bring awareness of the struggles to overcome addiction, to celebrate those in recovery and to provide inspiration for others on the path to recovery.    "Recover out loud so people don't need to suffer in silence," said Becky, one of the recovery speakers, in sharing her story.    As another speaker,

'Missing' Plaque Honoring Former Mayor Dedicated at North Adams City Hall

Dalton Green Committee Discusses Getting Compost Program

DALTON, Mass. — The Green Committee is mulling the potential of a composting program at the transfer station.    The program would allow residents to bring organic compost to the transfer station without charge.     The compost station would have three sections separated by concrete cubes. Veteran Spotlight: Air Force Staff Sgt. Kris Tebbetts

AVON, Mass. — Kris Tebbetts served his country in the Air Force as a staff sergeant from 1965 to 1968.    He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.    "I was 17 years old. Basic, it was OK, I didn't mind it. I graduated from high school in June and was like 'what do I do now?'" he remembered. Clarksburg School Applying for Safe Routes Grant

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Clarksburg School is applying a for a half-million Safe Routes to School grant to improve safe access to the Community Center.    "Essentially what we're proposing is a safe route from the school to the town field and a crosswalk to the senior center," said Assistant Superintendent Tara Barnes.
