Greylock Thunder 12U Wins New York Tournament

NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. -- The Greylock Thunder 12-and-under travel softball team Sunday beat the Webster (N.Y.) Xtreme in the final round of Rhyan Towne Memorial Scholarship Fund Softball Tournament.   The Thunder went 2-1 in pool play to earn the third seed for bracket play in the tournament.   Then it won three straight bracket games to claim the championship.   Tenley Biros went 4-0 in the circle for the Thunder, including a complete-game win in the final against Webster.   Biros struck out four, walked two and allowed no earned runs in a 10-2 win over the Webster Xtreme.   Liana Steiner led Greylock's offense in the final, going 2-for-2 with a

Jiu Jitsu Studio Approved in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A former worship space at 85 Main St. will be now be home for a martial arts studio.    The Planning Board on Monday approved an application for Steeple City Jiu Jitsu to set up shop in the former Green, a community and event space operated by Terra Nova Church.    The church, which has branches in Albany and Saratoga, N.Y., closed in North Adams last fall, and the Green along with it. Greylock Thunder To Hold Softball Tryouts

SteepleCats Move Within Game of .500 with Road Win

KEENE, N.H. -- Nelphie Lopez went 2-for-4 with a home run Tuesday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to an 8-5 win over the Keene Swamp Bats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Robert Stang hit a three-run home run in the top of the first to get North Adams off to a fast start.   A.J. Petraitis earned the win on the mound with five innings of work.   Brendan Morris and Thomas Sullivan combined for four innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.   The SteepleCats, who were 4-13 at one point this season, have won four in a row and are tied for second place in the NECBL's North Division with Sanford, Maine, and Upper Valley (Vt.).   North

Greenfield Tops North Adams Legion Baseball Juniors

GREENFIELD, Mass. – Hunter Donahue went 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs Tuesday to lead the Greenfield Post 81 Juniors to a 12-7 over North Adams Post 125 in American Legion Baseball.   Connor Bergeron had two doubles in an 11-hit attack for Greenfield.   Carson Dix went 2-for-3 with an RBI for North Adams, which got a double from Emery Rotter.   The Post 125 Juniors (9-5) are at West Springfield on Thursday.

West Nile Found in Lunenburg Goat

BOSTON — The state Department of Public Health said Tuesday that it had confirmed the first case of West Nile virus in an animal this year.    A goat was exposed to WNV in Lunenburg in Worcester County. The towns of Lunenburg, Leominster, Shirley, and Fitchburg are being raised to moderate risk.   "With this evidence of an animal infected with West Nile virus, we know that there are the right conditions and enough disease circulating to result in a human infection," said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein. MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Cuyler Baxter went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs Monday to lead the North Adams SteepleCats to a 9-5 win over the Vermont Mountaineers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Nelphie Lopez was 2-for-5 with a double in a 12-hit attack for North Adams.   SteepleCats starting pitcher Tristan Helmick struck out six and allowed one hit and no runs in six innings of work but did not factor into the decision.    Nicholas Noble earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.   North Adams (14-16) is at Keene, N.H., on Tuesday.

Clarksburg State Park Hosts Free Summer Programs

McCann to Destroy School Records for 2017-19

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — In accordance with state regulations, all temporary cumulative school and health records (except permanent grade records) for students who graduated from or left McCann Technical School during the 2017-2019 school year will be destroyed on Aug. 13.

Trump Administration Hold on Education Funds Threatens Programs

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — An after-school program that enhances students' school day learning is at risk due to actions of the Trump administration.   The Department of Education notified states that it is withholding more than $6 billion in federal grants for K-12 education.   That includes $108 million for schools in Massachusetts. SteepleCats Prevail in Pitchers Duel

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Nick Hunkele struck out 12 in a complete-game effort on the mound Sunday as the North Adams SteepleCats beat the North Shore Navigators, 1-0, in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   Hunkele scattered five hits and walked one over nine innings, lowering his earned run average to 5.21 this summer, as North Adams improved to 13-16.   J.T. Thompson hit a leadoff single and scored on Alex Mendes' RBI single in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie.   North Adams is on the road Monday and Tuesday before coming home to face Upper Valley on Wednesady at Joe Wolfe Field.
