 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — There's a sweet girl at No Paws Left Behind who is waiting for her new family. iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home. Rosie is a 2-year-old female Labrador who has been at the shelter for about five months. Shelter manager Noelle Howland introduced us to her. "Rosie came to us as a stray from animal control that was never claimed. She's been here with us since August," she said. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A joint convention of the School Committee and City Council on Tuesday unanimously elected Alexandra DiAddezio to fill the vacant seat on the committee. DiAddezio described herself as an "ardent public school advocate" who worked as an English teacher and college counselor at a high school in the Bronx, N.Y. She holds masters' degrees in English secondary education and in mental health counseling, and now works as therapist for students at Williams College. The open house will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 5 to 7 pm, at 197 Adams Rd., Williamstown. Visitors can tour the new Urgent Care that has been serving North Berkshire patients since mid-December, 2025. With the Jan. 1 swearing in of our city of North Adams mayor and City Council, we have an opportunity to celebrate diversity. For the first time in North Adams history, we have a woman for mayor, a woman majority council, and a council which is at least one-third LGBTQIA-plus. I believe this is something which should be celebrated, openly.
Despite a worrying national conversation which advocates that diversity equates weakness, the opposite is true, and has been proven time and time again. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Three of the Western Massachusetts counties, including the Berkshires, have fallen below the 95 percent vaccination level for measles, mumps, and rubella to ensure herd immunity. The Washington Post's Vaccination Report Card for the nation found Massachusetts as a whole was at 97 percent; the Berkshires has dipped to 91.8 percent in the years following the pandemic. Hampden County is at 93.8 percent and Franklin at 91.5 percent; Southern Vermont is even lower with Bennington County at 90 percent and Windham at 91.  DALTON, Mass. — The Dalton Fire Department is celebrating one of its own with the inaugural Above and Beyond Award. Firefighter and emergency medical technician Ryan Foley was presented the award in December. "In the past, had a couple of different types of awards just trying to recognize folks for their hard work and efforts throughout the year and encourage people to sort of push themselves professionally," said Charlotte Crane, fire prevention officer and EMT. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The License Commission continued a hearing on Key West to next month to allow for a consultation with the city solicitor. The State Street bar is accused of both underage serving and overserving related to an incident on Nov. 15. Commissioner Peter Breen asked for the chance to confer with the solicitor on fines or charges. According to Police Chief Mark Bailey, parents called police at about 11:30 on that Saturday night to report at least five underage drinkers in the bar. PITTSFIELD, Mass. – As the Berkshire region experiences a heightened level of respiratory illnesses, Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) has raised its Respiratory Illness Alert level to Yellow, or Moderate, triggering updated masking and visitation requirements, effective Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, at 7 am. Respiratory illnesses are impacting a significant number of BHS patients, and the changes are being implemented to enhance safety for BHS staff, patients and visitors. Yellow signifies moderate activity and now requires masking for all BHS staff when in direct contact with patients.
