MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations. "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff. "Releasing captured turtles back into the wild comes with risks as well." Groff said the risks include introducing diseases or disrupting the genetics of wild populations. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A few more names have been entered as potential candidates in the November election. Rachel Branch, who has run three times before for the corner office, has taken out nomination papers for mayor. She has a long history in public service and advocacy and has been a respite foster-care parent. Former City Clerk Joshua Vallieres has thrown his name out for City Council. Vallieres had been elected to the School Committee but had to resign because of his position in City Hall; he left the clerk's office last month. City Woman Wins Hometown Holidays Gift Basket |

Jonathan Secor had some help in pulling the winning ticket.
Congrats to Janet O'Neill of North Adams who won the big Hometown Holidays gift basket on Thursday. O'Neill won some $1,300 worth of gift certificates and merchandise.
The drawing could be entered by spending $50 downtown during the Thursday night Hometown Holiday events. Jonathan Secor of MCLA Gallery 51 said 62 people had entered the contest (including the editor of iBerkshires &mdash amazing how much cat toys cost nowadays).
