North Adams Graduates First Citizens Police Academy

MCLA Volleyball Advances to Conference Semi-Finals

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Chloe Garber had 15 kills Tuesday to lead the MCLA volleyball team to a four-set win over Fitchburg State in the quarter-finals of the MASCAC tournament.   Garber also had 15 digs in the 25-10, 25-22, 23-25, 25-9 win.   Lee High graduate Elizabeth Brown finished with nine kills and 14 digs.   The Trailblazers (20-4) travel to Worcester State on Thursday in the conference semi-finals.   Men's Basketball LYNDON, Vt. -- Taconic graduate Quentin Gittens scored a game-high 26 points Wednesday to lead MCLA to a 97-84 win over Lyndon State in the Trailblazers' season opener.   Mamadou Diallo had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds

Snow, Sleet Predicted Overnight Wednesday

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Northern Berkshires could be in for a wintry mix of snow and ice on Thursday morning.    The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has a winter weather advisory in effect beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday through 1 p.m. on Thursday.    Plan on slippery road conditions, especially on untreated surfaces. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute.   Affected areas in Southern Vermont and the Northern Berkshires could see up to an inch of snow and ice accumulations of 2/10ths of an inch. The advisory also covers New York's southern Adirondacks and the Lake George-Saratoga region.    Precipitation

Berkshire Family YMCA Seeks New CEO

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Jessica Rumlow will be leaving the Berkshire Family YMCA (BFYMCA) at the end of the year to work for the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs as the Chief Operations Officer.    Rumlow has worked for the BFYMCA for 10 years and was appointed to the CEO position in 2019.   During her tenure at the BFYMCA she supported its expansion of services into Bennington, Vt.., and lead the organization through COVID, but her biggest accomplishment was completing the $12.4M renovation project of the historic Pittsfield Branch.   The Board of directors plans to conduct a national search for the next CEO. Holiday Hours: Veterans Day

Veterans Day falls on Saturday, Nov. 11, and will also be observed Friday, Nov. 10, as a state and federal holiday.

The federal holiday is to commemorate the service of the nation's military veterans in ensuring peace.

It was first known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In recognition of the efforts of World War II veterans, President Eisenhower in 1954 signed legislation creating Veterans Day with the goal of honoring all American veterans.

You may spend decades contributing to various retirement accounts. But for some accounts, such as a traditional IRA and 401(k), you must start withdrawing funds at a certain point. What should you know about this requirement?   To begin with, the rules governing these withdrawals — technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — have changed recently. For many years, individuals had to begin taking their RMDs (which are based on the account balance and the IRS' life expectancy factor) when they turned 70½. State Treasurer Warns of Scam Calls

BOSTON — The state treasurer isn't calling you looking for money.    State Treasurer Deb Goldberg issued a scam warning on Monday cautioning Bay Staters about fraudulent phone calls claiming to be from her office.    The illegitimate calls claim "you owe money to the Treasury to avoid an arrest for drug possession."    We're pretty sure you can't pay your way out of a drug possession charge and the Office of the State Treasurer does not call people to collect money.    In her statement, Goldberg said she and her office want to ensure that no citizen is taken advantage of as part of this scam. North Adams Christmas Trees Delivered for the 2023 Season

The Atlantis Corp. crane prepares to lift the 30-foot fir into place.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city installed its two Christmas trees on Monday.   "The weather is perfect and we hope it holds up," Wire and Alarm Inspector Mitchell Meranti said. "We always enjoy this and are always ready for it."   The first of the trees was paraded down Main Street on Monday morning.   The 30-foot balsam fir was placed on the monument end of Main Street. It was donated by Tony Gazzaniga of North Adams.   Meranti said the tree is a bit wider than past trees.   "It will be a challenge, but it is a little shorter so that helps," he said.
