NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Peacemaker Award is given annually to an individual or group in Northern Berkshire.    The award, which originated as part of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, is made to persons who have contributed substantially to peace in our region. High Turnout in Berkshires Helps Elect New Slate of Officials

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The county saw a big turnout on Tuesday as voters elected a new slate of state officials, including a new governor in Maura Healey.   More locally, Democrats Paul Mark was elected to the state Senate and state Rep. William "Smitty" Pignatelli to another term in the State House in the new 3rd District. North Adams' own Tara Jacobs was on track to be the first Berkshire resident elected to the Governor's Council.   Jacobs had won a nail-biting primary against three Springfield-area attorneys that wasn't decided until the day after the election. DiGennaro Leads MCLA Women to Season-Opening Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Brooke DiGennaro and Zaylee Ramos each scored 24 points Tuesday to lead the MCLA women's basketball team to a 73-60 win over Lesley.   Drury graduate DiGennaro converted 10 of 15 field goal attempts and three of five tries from behind the 3-point line.   The Trailblazers outscored their hosts by a margin of 24-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.   MCLA (1-0) hosts Elms College on Saturday.   Men's Basketball NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Noah Yearsley and Dylan Morris-Gray each scored 23 points but MCLA dropped a 77-76 decision to Norwich in its opener.   MCLA (0-1) hosts Plattsburgh on Friday.

BRTA Services Free From Nov. 25 to Dec. 31

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) announced that beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 31, 2022, all BRTA bus and paratransit services will be free through the state's "Try Transit" initiative.   This Try Transit initiative is supported through the state budget and awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Motorama Taking Grant Applications

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The annual Motorama event has drawn thousands of people and hundreds of participants to downtown North Adams in a celebration of all things motorized.    The Motorama Committee is also committed to giving back to the community by donating the proceeds of each year to local charities.   Nonprofit organizations can apply for funds to support ongoing work or new programs. Berkshire Organizations Partner to Launch New Website to Help Grant Seekers

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Funding Focus (BFF), a new initiative established to support Berkshire County entities seeking federal and state funds for pandemic-related recovery and rebuilding, launched its website in November.   Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and several partner agencies joined to form BFF in response to a need for a clearinghouse focused on the investment of COVID-19 recovery dollars into the region, to improve the well-being of community members. McCann Celebrates 20 Nursing Grads in Pinning Ceremony

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — McCann Technical School honored the achievements of 20 new Practical Nursing graduates at its annual pinning ceremony on Monday. 

 

The group received congratulations and well wishes from faculty, administrators and several other guests.

 

Superintendent James Brosnan said the new graduates share a comradery together through the shared experience in the nursing program.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The MCLA English & Communications Department will host 15 alumni for a creative writing reading and showcase event to learn more about their post-graduate paths on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. in Murdock Hall 218.     Alumni will read poetry and prose, and present visual art and graphic design projects. North Adams Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Death of Grandmother

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A city woman Monday pleaded not guilty in Northern Berkshire District Court in the death of her grandmother.   Kelsie C. Cote, 26, of 22 Rich St., is charged with murder, assault to murder and evidence tampering in the death of Doris A. Cote, 74, of 300 Church St.   Through her attorney, Brockton's Kevin Reddington, Kelsie Cote entered her pleas before Judge Paul M. Vrabel in an arraignment that lasted a few minutes.   Reddington said his client agreed to voluntary detention in the case with her next court appearance scheduled for Jan. 9.   Also during the arraignment, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office amended the complaint

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — City workers installed the two Christmas Trees on Main Street Monday morning preparing the downtown for the holidays.   "Everyone is beeping at us; we have the Christmas music going," Wire and Alarm Inspector Mitchell Meranti said. "This just gets everyone in the holiday spirit. It is a lot of work but at the end of the day when we do the tree lighting the kids love it."   The first tree was transported from Clarksburg to the City Hall end of Main Street. BArT Students Receive John and Abigail Adams Scholarship

ADAMS, Mass. —The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is a merit-based program that provides credit towards tuition for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.

For this scholarship, merit is based on student scores on the 10th-grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test.

This year's recipients at Berkshire Arts & Technology (BArT) Charter Public School are Sheldon Alexander, Jacob Brown, Ivan Chen, Felee Davis, Isaac Huberdeau, Riley Jowett, Matthew Lizzo, Ranger McGinnis, Sawyer Moser, Ruby Pullaro-Clark, Ndey Touray, Matthew Weiskotten, and Giordan Zavatter.
