Fire Weather Watch in Berkshire County Staff Reports ,

The National Weather Service has declared a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday, May 16 until Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Dry conditions and gusty winds may result in rapid fire spread of ignition occurs. Gusts could be up to 35 miles per hour. The most critical conditions will be between late morning and sunset each day. Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the upper 60s to 70s. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Jane M Klausman Women In Business and Zonta International Women in STEM applications are now available from the Zonta Club of Berkshire County. Applications can be found here. The Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is awarded to college students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in business management. Applicants should be in their second year of college. Deadline for applications is July 1, 2023. The $1,000 winner is also eligible for an additional $8,000 award at the Zonta International level.  FALMOUTH, Mass. — Jeanne Bokina Christie served her country as a "Donut Dollie" during the Vietnam War. I found her to be full of positive energy with an amazing, fun-loving personality. It was easy to see the tremendous impact that she had on our soldiers in Vietnam. She was recruited by the Red Cross for its Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO) program upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin. The Class of 2023 includes former student-athletes who won six Berkshire County MVP awards, 23 all-Berkshire selections, 12 all-Western Mass selections and three all-Massachusetts selections.  MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says keeping native turtles as pets is prohibited because it can harm the turtle and pose threats to wild turtle populations. "Capturing a wild turtle and keeping it as a pet, even if only for a short time, is detrimental to that individual turtle and also to Vermont's turtle populations as a whole," said Vermont Fish and Wildlife herpetologist Luke Groff. "Releasing captured turtles back into the wild comes with risks as well." Groff said the risks include introducing diseases or disrupting the genetics of wild populations. Rachel Branch, who has run three times before for the corner office, has taken out nomination papers for mayor. She has a long history in public service and advocacy and has been a respite foster-care parent. Former City Clerk Joshua Vallieres has thrown his name out for City Council. Vallieres had been elected to the School Committee but had to resign because of his position in City Hall; he left the clerk's office last month. I have a pit in my stomach this morning after reading about the decision against making Berkshire Towers a homeless shelter.
I am utterly disappointed by Mayor Macksey, The North Adams City Council, Representative Barrett, and President Birge in your handling of this situation.
You have all aided in the further traumatization of families seeking shelter.
There will never be enough resources to support people who are unhoused until you all make it a priority to support those resources. When someone redevelops an apartment building — no one questions whether we have enough resources available to support tenants moving in. But suddenly when we are talking about

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams man charged with brandishing a firearm outside a local bar last year has been sentenced to a dozen years in prison. Keith Larrabee, 27, of East Quincy Street, pleaded guilty on Monday in Berkshire Superior Court to counts of drug trafficking, drug possession, illegal possession of ammunition and firearms and assault and battery related to three incidents in North Adams. Larrabee was one of several people involved in an altercation at Key West Lounged that ended with two people being shot in a nearby apartment building on Feb. 19, 2022. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday approved the use of nearly $2 million in free cash to reserves and to clean up some accounts in deficit. "Overall, we close the year in the black, which you want to do, with some money on hand and we were able to clean up some of our our books," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey, describing "accounting deficiencies" in the past. The city's fiscal 2022 free cash was certified at $1,953,766. Of that, $984,145 was transferred into the stabilization account.
