Lazits Leading Lions to First in IviesiBerkshires.com Sports,

 Taconic High School graduate and Columbia University junior Anton Lazits is hitting .253 for the Lions this spring. Lazits has six home runs, five doubles and 13 RBIs in starting all 22 games for the Lions, who are 10-12 overall and 5-1 in the Ivy League heading into this weekend's games at Dartmouth. He started the year with two home runs and four RBIs in Columbia's 15-6 loss at Florida on Feb. 23. Saturday's 11:30 Columbia game against the Big Green is scheduled to be telecast on ESPN-plus. This year's keynote speaker is MCLA alumnus Deven Philbrick '16 – a poet and PhD Candidate in English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —Schoolchildren will have an extra long holiday vacation next year. The School Committee approved a calendar that has students on break from the end of the school day Friday, Dec. 20, to Thursday, Jan. 2. The calendar was one of two options recommended by the teachers union. Superintendent of Schools Barbara Malkas said the only difference was the start date. The teachers preferred to begin professional development on Monday, Aug. 26, with school starting Thursday, Aug. 29.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Local officials and residents expressed strong support for developing the Northern Tier Passenger Rail proposal that would bring rail transit from North Adams to Boston. Around 240 people jumped onto a Zoom presentation on Thursday night to provide additional feedback on service alternatives based last year's initial presentations. The changes require certain facilities seeking air emissions permits in or near communities with environmental justice populations to conduct a cumulative impact analysis, which evaluates existing local environmental and health conditions in a community. The course is part of a Strong Communities grant that includes life-skill training in other areas such as swimming, cooking and addressing domestic violence. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — If a medical emergency happens, Drury High students know how to "Stop the Bleed." Teens enrolled in the high school's life skills class learned life-saving measures this week at the Police Department. They were trained in how to effectively use tourniquets, gauzes and bandages and when to use them based on the injury and its location on the body.
