PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Pittsfield’s Abigail Geurds was the fastest female finisher in the 4th of July 5K on Friday morning. Geurds covered the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 17 minutes, 51 seconds to place 26th overall. The race saw 1,141 competitors finish the out-and-back course from Wahconah Street south to the intersection of South Street and West Housatonic and back to Wahconah Park. The top finisher overall was Steve Dowsett of Newburyport, who ran a time of 15:12 to finish three seconds ahead of runner-up Alex White of Dalton. Pittsfield's Nick Guachione doubled in a run in the winning rally, which also saw Gabriel Natividad and Owen Arias double. Thomas Sullivan earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief on the mound. Owen Crowe earned a two-inning save. There are two candidates certified for the November ballot: Jennifer Macksey is running for her third term in the corner office and Scott Berglund, a sales representative, is challenging her. Richard David Greene, who has taken out papers in the past for office, has not returned papers for mayor. Fourteen people have taken out papers for City Council, including seven incumbents. The first two sessions are a baseball camp for children 7 to 12. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon, July 7-9. From 9 to noon, July 21-23, The Infield will hold a softball camp for children 7 to 12. The cost for each three-day camp is $150. The Infield is holding an all-sports camp for kids 4 to 6 on Aug. 18 and 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. The camp will allow youngsters to explore baseball, soccer, basketball and more.
