Letter: The Children of North Adams Deserve New GreylockLetter to the Editor, 02:00PM / Thursday, September 19, 2024
To the Editor: The City of North Adams has an incredible opportunity on Oct. 8. As a community, we not only have the chance to say "yes" to being the recipient of the largest grant in the City's history, at over $42 million. We not only have the chance to move forward with building a state-of-the-art energy efficient building that is projected to save the city $100K-plus per year in expenses. We not only have the chance to avoid dumping tens of millions of dollars into Band-Aids on our existing deficient building (Brayton) with systems at the end of their serviceable life, and we not only have the chance to invest in a project that could drive over $100 million in local

Greylock School Building Committee Hopes for Positive on Vote05:25AM / Thursday, September 19, 2024 | | NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — School Building Committee members are hoping their next meeting will move the Greylock School project forward. "Right now, we're kind of in the holding pattern for the MSBA," said Mayor Jennifer Macksey. "They're waiting for the results of our vote." Tuesday's meeting had to be one of the shortest for the committee — approval of some invoices and minutes, and a reminder of the consequential vote on Oct. 8. That's when voters will be asked to authorize the $65 million school project that would see the construction of a new Greylock School, the demolition of the old school and the closure of 0 Comments Read More >> |
Historic North Adams Home Destroyed by FireBy Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff 10:52AM / Wednesday, September 18, 2024 | | A GoFundMe for the Moon family has been started to help them get back on their feet after losing everything in Wednesday's fire. : The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental after the state fire marshal visited the scene in the afternoon. Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre said on Wednesday evening that the specific cause will be unknown as the condition of the structure is too damaged to enter safely. The building is a total loss, he said, and attributed the fast pace and intensity of the blaze to the very old, dry, heavy timbers in the nearly 300-year-old structure. He said Bennington, Vt., Rural Fire Department also pitched in with a 0 Comments Read More >> |
McCann Sets Aside Funding For MSBA Feasibility StudyBy Jack Guerino, iBerkshires Staff 06:06PM / Tuesday, September 17, 2024 | | NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann School Committee voted to prepare $275,000 for a Massachusetts School Building Authority feasibility study if the school is accepted into repair program. "I don't think it's going to cost what I'm asking for, but I don't want to screw around," Superintendent James Brosnan said Thursday at the School Committee meeting. "When we are at the end of October, we will want to move fast and already have that money authorized. Maybe that will move us up a little as opposed to someone who has not gotten that done." In 2023 the school submitted a statement of interest to be included in the accelerated 0 Comments Read More >> |
Clarksburg Board Suspends Police Operations With Chief's RetirementBy Tammy Daniels, iBerkshires Staff 05:42AM / Tuesday, September 17, 2024 | | CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted to suspend police operations in the town of 1,700 at the end of shift on Friday. That's when Police Chief Michael Williams will retire after 40 years on the force, the last 21 as chief. Officials have been debating for weeks about the future of the Police Department, which has declined at this point to Williams and a single part-time officer. "I think we have to transition to State Police," said board member Colton Andrews. Fellow member Daniel Haskins agreed: "I don't see any alternatives at the moment." Officials had researched several options: hire a 0 Comments Read More >> |
Letter: Save Notch ForestLetter to the Editor, 07:05PM / Monday, September 16, 2024
To the Editor: I am writing to express deep concern over the proposed logging project near Notch Reservoir and the Bellows Pipe Trailhead. This plan poses a significant threat to both the environment and our community's well-being. Notch Road has already seen the effects of large logging projects. A private logging project from a few years ago (approved by the City) causes flooding during heavy rains, pouring into driveways and basements. Our area regularly faces power outages and property damage due to increasing wind gusts. Without the forests as a buffer, I fear these issues will worsen. While the city proposes installing culverts as part of the "reconstruction" of the

Letter: Save Brayton: Vote No on Oct. 8Letter to the Editor, 07:00PM / Monday, September 16, 2024
To the Editor: The city of North Adams wants to use state money to demolish and rebuild Greylock School, all because it has neglected to maintain the resources it already has. A vote for a $65 million school is a vote for higher rent, groceries, and taxes — all for a district with a declining school-age population. The $65 million budget for the demolition and reconstruction of the Greylock School is just an initial estimate. While the opposing side notes that the state is paying for $45 million of the project, taxpayers will pay for cost overruns. North Adams has not had a single public building project on budget in the past 20 years. Even if a Ferrari is 0 Comments Read More >> |

"I had a development of the mind in terms of mindset, I learned to dream," he said during a phone interview after arriving in the United States. "And what I saw here, I saw, you know, possibility of a better Uganda because of what I found in this country." Luzze was a child in his native Uganda when he joined the choir, a Christian-based nonprofit that seeks to improve the lives of impoverished children largely from Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda.
