American Legion Post 125 Reception for Veterans, Scouts Completing 100 Mile Walk

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Frank R. Stiles American Legion Post 125 will be hosting a reception for a group of Veterans and Scouts as they complete a 100 Mile Walk from Sutton.    The event will take place Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 12:45 p.m.    The walkers will be following the route of Ashland St, Main St, and American Legion Drive. It is requested that supporters line the streets as the walkers pass.    The reception will commence at the completion of the walk, approximately 1:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 125, 91 American Legion Drive.    Food will be available while supplies last and free entertainment will be provided by Tribute to REAL Country

An image from the city's property database shows what the front of the building looked like Firefighters were on the scene Thursday morning monitoring the wreckage.   "Nothing new right now, obviously the fire is knocked down and we should be out of here shortly," Deputy Fire Chief Robert Patenaude said. North Adams Committee Submits Preliminary School Project Plans

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The School Building Committee on Tuesday approved the preliminary design program submission for the Greylock/Brayton school project.    The elements of the design plan have been reviewed over a number of meetings; Tuesday's unanimous vote means the entire package can now be submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority.    Tim Alix of Colliers International, the owner's project manager, reminded the committee that the program was the review of both school sites and potential development of those sites.    "We have the two school sites, whether they're new buildings or add-ons or renos, to determine if your

North Adams Beach Party Approved for Margaritas, Beer and Wine

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Adult beverages were OK'd for upcoming events on Eagle Street this summer.    The License Commission last week approved two one-day licenses for alcohol at the Eagle Street Beach Party this July 15 and one day licenses for First Friday activities through October.    Desperados for years had served up margaritas during the adult portion of the popular beach party, when Eagle Street is covered with sand from end to end. Youth Event to Learn About Track and Field Set for May 28

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Children 8 and up are invited to a Track and Field Youth Camp on Sunday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Taconic High School track.   Join high school coaches and student-athletes from Pittsfield High and Taconic High to learn about mental health benefits of youth sports and the fundamentals of various track and field events.   The event is sponsored by Movember, which will be giving away sweatshirts to the first 50 registered participants.   Check in on the day of the event begins at 9:30 a.m. Preregistration is available here.

North Adams Art Commission Votes Flowers for Eagle Street Pride Mural

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The downtown will be getting a spray of flowers on Eagle Street this June.    Six flowers — each in a rainbow color and representing a Massachusetts wildflower — will be painted on Eagle Street by volunteers.    The Public Arts Commission on Monday approved the street mural that will be part of the next First Friday event in June to mark Pride Month.    The Rainbow Street Crossings proposal was presented by Andrew Fitch, an organizer of the monthly downtown event. Former Kmart Plaza Sold to Connecticut Realty Company

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Steeple City Plaza was sold last month to a Connecticut realty company for $2 million.    NRT Realty LLC of Avon, Conn., closed on the parcel on April 28, according to records at the Registry of Deeds. The manager is identified as N. Robert Trigg of Avon; a phone number listed for Trigg was not in service.    Thomas Krens had indicated interest in purchasing the former the Kmart plaza as a site for his Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum. Fire Weather Watch in Berkshire County

The National Weather Service has declared a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday, May 16 until Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.   Dry conditions and gusty winds may result in rapid fire spread of ignition occurs. Gusts could be up to 35 miles per hour.    The most critical conditions will be between late morning and sunset each day.   Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the upper 60s to 70s. Temperatures on Wednesday will be in the upper 40s to 50s.

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Jeanne Bokina Christie served her country as a "Donut Dollie" during the Vietnam War. I found her to be full of positive energy with an amazing, fun-loving personality. It was easy to see the tremendous impact that she had on our soldiers in Vietnam.   She was recruited by the Red Cross for its Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO) program upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin.
