 CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Town and school officials came together on Monday in hopes of compromising over a tight budget. Instead, they ended up agreeing to dip into their reserves to ensure that prekindergarten program will continue free for town residents. The Select Board had been pushing for the school budget to come in at a 2 percent increase. The School Committee on Monday was prepared to vote a budget up by $128,454, or 4.53 percent. After an hour and a half of discussion, the school budget had gone up $1,000 to $2,967,609.58 and town officials agreed to commit $72,000 in free cash they'd wanted to set aside for the school 0 Comments

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Hoosac Harvest's Annual Seedling Swap returns to downtown this year on Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Adams Farmers Market in its new location on Main Street. All seedlings are available at no cost; there's no requirement to bring any in order to take some home. Whether individuals are dropping off seedlings for exchange or visiting to browse, it's advisable to bring a tray for collecting new plants. Shared seedlings may include surplus vegetables or flowers purchased or cultivated, as well as cuttings or excess plants from personal yards. PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Matthew Ferraro was the first runner across the finish line at the MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon. Ferraro clocked a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes flat on the Ashuwilticook Rail Trail course. He finished a little more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Nick Reid (2:46:15). Simone Veale won the race's women's division in a time of 3:18:42. She beat out Jill Hussain, who covered the course in 3:27:23. The fastest marathoner on Sunday was Stephen Gulley, a hand cyclist, who clocked a time of 2:15:03.  EASTON, Mass. — Cory Ahonen, chief engagement officer for the state's Executive Office of Veterans Services, served his country in the Air Force from 2008 to 2014 as a staff sergeant. He grew up in Sandwich, graduated from Sandwich High School and did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. "I joined to get out of a dead-end path," he said. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mass MoCA Commission on Thursday approved three new tenants for Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Kimma Stark, project manager at the museum, gave the commission the rundown on each of the new tenants. Eric Beeman is a licensed mental health counselor who uses art in his therapy. He holds a master's degree in expressive arts and arts therapy from Lesley University, where he's also taught graduate-level practices and principles of expressive art therapy. Richard Neal has secured $700,000 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' budget to complete a feasibility study of the Hoosic River flood chutes. The Corps of Engineers is in the midst of a three-year, $3 million study of the aging concrete flood chutes that control the passage of the river through the city. North Adams has ponied up $500,000 as part of its share of the study and another $1.5 million is expected to come from state and federal coffers. The Board of Directors of the Al Nelson Friendship Center Food Pantry in North Adams wishes to thank the North Adams, Clarksburg and Florida Mountain community for their generation donations to the May 11 Letter Carrier Food Drive.
We received a total of 3,595 pounds of food and personal care items.
We equally want to thank our Letter Carriers who work out of the North Adams Post Office. They again went above and beyond in collecting the donations and bringing them to the collection and sorting site. They are always a pleasure to work with.
We also want to thank the Northern Berkshire United Way, the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, and the Berkshire United Way

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The mayor is asking the City Council to take up a revamp of the cannabis ordinance that will allow more establishments to licensed.
