 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday accepted two sections of state law that will allow the Commission on Disabilities to apply for grants and use handicapped-parking fees. The adoptions were brought forward by City Councilor Ashley Shade in cooperation with Mayor Jennifer Macksey and the commission. "The section 8J will allow the Disabilities Commission and the city to be eligible for grants and funding through the state to improve disability access and for projects that would affect people with disabilities in our community," said Shade.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Historic Eagle Street will be covered with sand on Saturday afternoon for the 24th annual Eagle Street Beach Party. Founded by artist Eric Rudd in 1999 as an annual community sculpture, the beach party is sponsored by Rudd's Berkshire Art Museum and the city of North Adams. Some 500,000 pounds of sand donated by Specialty Minerals will be spread curb to curb the entire length of the downtown street. Hundreds of children and families each year are able to enjoy the unique urban beach and create sand sculptures at the community art event. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — North Adams Public Schools' 21st Century Program and the Drury Workforce Development Program have collaborated to provide internship opportunities for 11 Drury High School students this summer. These paid internships are for Teaching Assistants working with 210 students in grades K-6 in the 21st Century Summer Program at Greylock Elementary School. The 11 student interns are assisting nine teachers to provide educational and social-emotional development programming. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announced that its Radiologic Technology program continues a 100 percent employment rate for graduates over the last five years. MCLA became the teach-out partner for Southern Vermont College's (SVC) Radiologic Sciences program in 2019, following SVC's closure. The Radiologic Technology program has doubled in class size over the last year, from five to 10 students, and is expected to welcome 20 students in next year's class.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Michael Lewis served his country in the Navy as a petty officer, second class, from 1977 to 1994. Born in North Adams, he would do his basic training at Great Lakes, Ill. His first assignment would be at submarine school (NAVSUBCOM) in Groton, Conn., then to the USS Pensacola (LSD-38) out of Little Creek, Va. While serving onboard the Pensacola, his ship was anchored off the coast of Beirut in October 1980 as part of a Multinational Peacekeeping Force, when the U.S. Embassy was bombed.
