Maura Healey will hang an empty gold frame in her office so young people can envision themselves there one day and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, a portrait of former Gov. Jane Swift. The unveiling on Wednesday was the result of a statewide student essay competition in which Bay State students were asked to decide whose portraits should be featured in the new administration's offices. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The City Council was found to be in violation of Open Meeting Law regarding an email sent by Councilor Keith Bona last fall. Councilor Marie T. Harpin filed the complaint after Bona relayed a message from David Carver, a real estate developer, about the tax shift the council was debating to all its members and to the media. Bona is chair of the Finance Committee and said he thought it important that his fellow councilors receive the email and a summary of the phone conversation he had with Carver before the council meeting of Nov. 22. NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— This June, North Adams' downtown vacant storefront windows are set to receive a new collection of artwork from local artists, with the intention of beautifying the city. Existing artwork will be printed on banners which will fill each available street-level window. Artists from all mediums including, but not limited to drawing, painting, graphic design, fiber, ceramics, sculpture, photography, are encouraged to apply, and will receive a stipend for their contributions if their work is selected. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A number of residents at Tuesday's City Council meeting spoke out against a proposal by the state to use the Berkshire Towers as a temporary shelter for unhoused families. Neighbors of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts say they are concerned about a lack of transparency and the unknown impacts that 50 to 75 families will have on the community's resources and the college. As a social worker and professional who attempts to provide greater access to quality mental health care and equitable resource facilitation to underserved families, I have serious concerns about the development of a homeless shelter at [Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts], directly impacting North Adams. I have had reservations about asserting my opinion and how it may appear to others, as this is a difficult position to take in my profession. Regardless, we need to call for some critical community conversations with MCLA prior to the action(s) they propose to fill a vacant building.

 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will end the year with more than $1 million to the good but is expected to come up a short in fiscal 2024. "Our best estimate, we're going to end fiscal year '23, our best estimate right now from what we can see, at about $1.5 million, which will go to reserves," Joseph DaSilva, vice president of administration and finance, told the college trustees last week. The projection is based on a combination of increased revenue from tuition and fees this past year and from not filling a number of full- and part-time positions.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Northern Berkshire Youth Baseball will hold its second annual Baseball Bonanza on Saturday at 4:30 on Fallon Field. The event will feature skills competitions for the league's majors and minors age divisions, a skills competition and home run derby for seniors in the Babe Ruth program and a home run derby for high school players. Musicians CJ Field will perform, and there will be a penny auction, food trucks and "adult beverages" in the nearby Greylock Pavillion.
