NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Junior high students will go remote for the last two days of this week after a member of the school community tested positive for COVID-19.

Superintendent Barbara Malkas posted the notice on the public schools' website on Wednesday but did not identify if the affected person was a student or staff. The individual tested positive after becoming symptomatic, she wrote.

"We have been planning for this scenario during our reopening planning process and have a comprehensive plan in place to sanitize the school, inform staff and families whose students were at risk of exposure or in close contact, and support the affected family as they navigate this stressful experience," she said. "Our student body and staff have been closely adhering to the safety protocols including mask wearing, hand washing, and physical distancing. We are grateful to our families for their continued efforts to keep students home at the first sign of symptoms. These measures, taken in combination, greatly reduce the risk of additional transmission."

Students in the 7th and 8th Grade Academy will be remote for Thursday and Friday and return to hybrid learning on Monday. Classes are currently in a morning/afternoon mode with one "cohort" on Monday and Tuesday and the second on Thursday and Friday. Wednesdays have been full remote to allow for cleaning in between cohorts.

Staff and students identified through contact tracing will be notified by School Nurse Leader Lauren Gage regarding testing, including using the Abbott BinaxNOW rapid results test. Those students who are not being notified can participate in the pool testing.

Parents whose students are tested for COVID-19 at their health care provider's office or at the Stop the Spread Center on Church Street are being asked to report the results to the school nurse. Anyone showing symptoms is asked to contact the school immediately.

For those who have completed the pool testing consent form and wish their student to be tested, email Gage at lgage@napsk12.org with the student's name, grade and preferred testing time (7:15 or 11 a.m.).
