MCLA Harrier Posts Top 10 Finish

POULTNEY, Vt. -- The MCLA men's cross country team had its best finish of the 2018 meet season as they finished in fourth place at the Green Mountain Invitational on Saturday,
 
The Trailblazers were led by Christopher Gamble, who earned a top 10 finish, his first of the season.
 
The meet was won by St. Joseph's of Maine  Dillon VanDemortel of Cobleskill took the individual title in 25 minutes, 51 seconds.
 
Gamble covered the 8k race 28:19 to finish solo ninth. He narrowly missed out on a top five finish by just 13 seconds.
 
Corey Powers was next across the line for MCLA finishing in 13th place. He covered the track in 29:44 for MCLA.
 
Owen Fitzgerald ended in 29th place while Tyler Wade and Theodore Jones finished in 40th and 41st respectively.
 
The Trailblazers are off until Oct. 27, when they host the MASCAC Championships.
 
Women's Cross Country
POULTNEY, Vt. -- The MCLA women's cross country program continued their fall slate at the Green Mountain Inviational.
 
The Trailblazers were paced by Julie Gambill's 21st place finish.
 
The meet was won by St. Joseph's of Maine, while SUNY Delhi came in second place. Kaylyn Crompton of Castleton University took the individual title in 19:50.
 
Gambill covered the 5k course in 22:02 for her 21st place finish. Jenna Berg came in 39th place after running the course in 27:18. Berg finished just ahead of Breanna Castor, who came in 40th overall. Hunter Schrade finished in 45th for MCLA, and Kaitlin Gevry 47th to rounded out MCLA's contingent in the race.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action in two weeks when they host the MASCAC Championships.
 
Men's Soccer
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Shane notched a pair of goals as the Fitchburg State University men's soccer team defeated the Trailblazers of MCLA, 3-2, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
 
MCLA (0-12, 0-5) grabbed the 1-0 advantage at the 8:14 mark when junior Connor Kristiansen settled a loose ball on the left side of the net and blasted a shot into the lower right corner for his first goal of the season.
 
Fitchburg State (5-7, 2-3) knotted the score in the 42nd minute of action as junior Marckdonard Bastien collected a feed from classmate Zachary Buckland and deposited a shot into the back of the net for his second tally on the year to make the score 1-1 going into the intermission.
 
Following the break, the Falcons took the lead 48:45 mark when Grenier lofted a crossing shot that deflected off the far post and into the net for his second score of the 2018 campaign for the 2-1 edge.
 
The Trailblazers retied the contest (2-2) in the 58th minutes of play as senior Khalil Kareh of Adams collected a feed off a free kick from Kristiansen and headed the ball inside the far post.
 
Fitchburg regained the lead at the 68:08 mark when Grenier converted a penalty kick after blasting a shot into the right side of the net for his second score of the contest, resulting in the 3-2 final.
 
MCLA hosts Salem State on Friday.
 
Women's Volleyball
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's volleyball team swept visiting MCLA, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-12), on Saturday.
 
Junior middle hitter Sara LaFreniere (Becket, Mass.) and freshman outside hitter Laiken Cornwell-L'Hote (Dalton, Mass.) led MCLA (6-14, 0-5) with eight and seven kills, respectively.
 
The Trailblazers entertain Fitchburg State University on Wednesday.
