Southwestern Vermont Health Care Offers Classes, Groups

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Health Care offers classes and events to help patients learn more about their health in groups.

* Early Intervention Play Group, 10:30 a.m.-noon, every Monday, except holidays, Catamount Connections, 504 Main St., Suite 1 in Bennington: Children's Integrated Services and Early Intervention host a play group for children birth to age 3 and their parents and siblings. The play group includes a snack, story time, art activities, and free play. Coordinators also provide education to parents and caregivers.

* Gentle Yoga for Cancer Survivors, 5-6 p.m. Mondays, Conference Room C of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center at 100 Hospital Drive in Bennington: Participants will learn basic balancing postures, breathing, and visualization techniques for relaxation, stress reduction, flexibility, and strength. The class is presented by Ali Wassick and Jane Schaeffer of the Yoga Place in Bennington and is supported by the Cancer Center Patient Resource Fund and the Cancer Center Community Crusaders. * Quitting Tobacco, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Suite 300, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center at 100 Hospital Drive in Bennington: Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. And quitting smoking or chewing tobacco is the most important step you can take to live a longer and healthier life. * Car Seat Installation and Safety Check, every third Monday: A current and properly installed car seat is an important part of keeping your child safe. Southwestern Vermont Medical Center's Women's and Children's Services department offers a free car seat fitting the third Monday of every month. Certified installers can install one car seat per half-hour appointment time. Call 802-447-5160 for a half-hour appointment.

* Infant and Child CPR, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, Women’s and Children’s Conference Room, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center: Learn and practice the quick and accurate response to infant and child respiratory distress. * Hospital to Home for New Parents, 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, Women’s and Children’s Conference Room, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center: This interactive class reviews care for you and your baby from delivery to home and beyond. Topics include hospital discharge, care for mom after delivery, infant feeding, soothing techniques for baby, and infant safety and wellness. There is no charge. * Qi Gong for Cancer Survivors, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sept. 26, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center at 100 Hospital Drive in Bennington: Participants will learn Ba Duan Jin, which means "eight strands of the brocade." The class will help students to strengthen the Yin and Yang energies of the body and balance the body’s Qi. Benefits include finding peace in the here and now, improved immunity, better sleep, increased energy sensitivity, greater vitality, and stress relief. The class is presented by Nate Sumner of Villari's Martial Arts Center. The class is generously supported by the Cancer Center Community Crusaders. There is no charge to participate. * American Red Cross Blood Drive, 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center: New blood donors are needed every day to save the lives of patients who depend on the generosity of volunteer donors. Make your appointment online.

* Chronic Disease Management Class, 1 p.m. Thursdays, starting Sept. 27, Jacksonville Community Church, Vermont Route 112, Jacksonville, Vt.: If you are dealing with a long-lasting (chronic) disease — like arthritis, diabetes, cancer, obesity, or heart disease — you are not alone. The good news is that there's a lot you can do to help manage chronic disease and prevent related problems. Our program can help you make choices to live healthier. * Better Breathers, 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 (every fourth Thursday), Toolan Building Conference Room, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center: Better Breathers Clubs are welcoming support groups for patients and caregivers affected by breathing problems of any kind. Learn better ways to better cope with lung diseases while getting the support of others in similar situations. Led by a trained facilitator, these in-person adult support groups give you the tools you need to live the best life you can. Free. For more information, call 802-447-5140.
