MCLA Volleyball Team Wins Season Opener

JOHNSON, Vt. -- Alyssa Keegan collected seven kills while the MCLA volleyball team amassed 15 aces as they cruised past Northern Vermont- Johnson 3-0 Friday in the season opener for both programs.
 
MCLA took command early taking the first set 25-8 before earning a 25-20 second set win.  They would close out the match with a 26-24 win in the third.
 
Keegan notched her seven kills on 13 attacks.  Raegan Scattergood added three kills for the Trailblazers. Celine Manigbas ended with seven digs as did Sara LaFreniere.
 
MCLA was the beneficiary of 18 attack errors and 20 service errors from the Badgers.
 
The Trailblazers have a quick turnaround as they travel to Gordon Saturday for a tri match with the Fighting Scots and Neumann.
 
Women's Soccer
DUDLEY, Mass. -- MCLA lifted the curtain on the 2018 season 2-0 loss at Nichols College.
 
Nichols scored twice in the first half and made it stand to earn its first victory of 2018. In the 16th minute, Madison Clark lofted a high shot that MCLA keeper Megan Richardson (Hoosac Valley) barely got her hands on and deflected it off the crossbar. The rebound went directly to Meghan Dunn who easily poked it thru the left side of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
 
Ten minutes later, Clark tallied off a Kaylin Goncalves feed. She lofted a perfect ball into the upper left cage to make it 2-0.  It would stay that way until halftime as the Bison controlled most of the half of play as they outshot MCLA 12-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
 
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the closing half of play as Nichols continued to hold the advantage, owning a 13-5 margin in shots.  
 
Nichols keeper Brooke Downey earned her first win of the season stopping all 4 shots she saw.
 
Richardson collected 8 saves in defeat for MCLA.
 
The Trailblazers will continue their early season road trip on Tuesday when they head to St. Joseph of Conn.
 
Men's Soccer
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The University of St. Joseph (Conn.) men's soccer team defeated MCLA 5-0 this evening in their inaugural contest.
 
After a scoreless 30 minutes, the Blue Jays took over. In the 31st minute, they were the beneficiary of an own goal. Matt Lombardo fired a cross towards the right post that a Trailblazer defender caromed into the net for a 1-0 USJ advantage.
 
The Blue Jays outshot MCLA, 22-10, in the contest. Anes Gadun stopped one shot on his way to recording a shutout.
 
Sean Bradshaw absorbed the loss for MCLA.
 
The Trailblazers host Western New England on Sunday at Shewcraft Field.
