New Pitches MCLA Baseball to Road Sweep in MASCAC

WORCESTER, Mass. – The MCLA baseball team totaled 14 runs in two games to defeat the Lancers of Worcester State twice by scores of 7-1 in a Saturday afternoon Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. 
 
In Game 1, the Trailblazers scored seven runs on nine hits from five players.
 
The Lancers made three fielding errors in the first inning, which led to one unearned run. The visitors tacked on two runs in the top of the second on an RBI double from Joe Toledo and an RBI from Bill Pulasky (Lanesboro). They added in two more in the top of the third on RBI from Joe DiMassimo (Dalton) and Jeff Bink to hold a 5-0 advantage.
 
MCLA added another run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from DiMassimo.
 
Logan Rumbolt (North Adams) registered two hits for the Trailblazers.
 
The Trailblazers took Game 2 from the Lancers, also by a score of 7-1, in the nightcap. The visitors scored seven runs on an 11-hit attack led by Bink, Rumbolt, and Ferrara.
 
After a scoreless three innings, MCLA put up three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. Rumbolt sent the first run in, Ferrara sent the second in, and then Antonio Archinia sent the third in on a double to right center.
 
Bobby New (Pittsfield) went the distance and earned his fourth win of the season. He allowed the Lancers one run on six hits and struck out four in the batter's box.
 
Rumbolt led the Trailblazers' offense in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
 
MCLA (11-10-1/4-3-1) hosts Bridgewater State on Sunday.
 
Softball
WORCESTER, Mass. - The MCLA softball team managed just one hit as the Trailblazers dropped game one of a doubleheader to Worcester State 6-0 this afternoon. The Lancers also took the nightcap winning 8-4.
 
MCLA drops to 6-16 overall and is 2-6 in the MASCAC.  The Lancers improve to 14-9 overall and is 6-2 in the conference.
 
In Game 1, Worcester State scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.  Dakota Smith-Porter's RBI groundout scored Sydney Despres for the early 1-0 lead. In the third, Becky Brandeberry lofted a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Despres again to increase the margin to 2-0.
 
In the nightcap, the Lancers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Smith-Porter tripled home a run and then came around on an error for a 2-0 first inning advantage. Ashley Lynch singled up the middle driving in two more runs for a 4-0 edge before MCLA mounted a rally.
 
In the fourth inning, Kara Adams ripped an RBI double to right field and Alanza Quinones reached on an error scoring Adams to pull within 4-2. Nevada Nelsen's RBI hit made it 4-3 and another run came home on an error to tie it up at 4-4 in the sixth.
 
The Lancers took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the sixth when Kaiulani Ennis homered to center field scoring Samantha Stake for a 6-4 lead.
 
MCLA is back in action Sunday when it hosts Bridgewater State at 1 p.m.
