Pittsfield Grad New Pitches Complete Game Win for MCLA

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- MCLA left handed pitcher Bobby New tossed a complete game as the Trailblazers earned a MASCAC twinbill split defeating Mass. Maritime 2-1 in the nightcap of Saturday's MASCAC double-header.
 
The Trailblazers dropped a heart breaking 4-3 decision in 12 innings in the opener.
 
MCLA improves to 9-9-1 on the season and is 2-3-1 in the MASCAC. MMA dropped its first MASCAC game of 2018 as they are 5-1 in the league and 12-10 overall.
 
MCLA struck first in the opening game posting a run in the top of the third when sophomore Ben Durland scored on a throwing error. The Buccaneers answered in the bottom of the frame putting up three runs, the first coming when senior Connor Kennedy hit a leadoff tripled and scored on a wild pitch. A two run RBI base hit by junior Robert Dembitzki later plated Logan Sullo, who had reached on a walk and senior Billy Keane who reached after being hit by a pitch.
 
Massachusetts Maritime starter Mason Ashburn went 5-2/3 frames, giving up a double in the top of the fifth to MCLA junior shortstop Jeff Blink that plated a pair of runs to knot the contest at 3-3 and eventually send the game into extra frames.
 
MCLA senior starter Liam Nolan (Taconic) went eight innings striking out six before turning the ball over to freshman Brandon Condon (Mount Greylock), who held the Buccaneers in check until putting runners on second and third with no outs in the twelfth. The Trailblazers turned to sophomore right hander Brody Farnum, who registered the first out of the inning before surrendering a pinch hit base hit down the third base line to Sances that scored sophomore designated hitter Ethan O'Harewith the game winner, handing Farnum the loss.
 
Pittsfield High grad New was outstanding in the nightcap as he went the distance and improved to 3-1 on the season. The complete game was his fourth of the season for the Trailblazers as he struck out five Buccaneers.
 
Softball
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- MCLA sophomore Kara Adams went 4-for-4 and led a 13-hit offensive attack to lead the Trailblazers to a game one 9-3 MASCAC victory over Mass. Maritime this afternoon.
 
McCann Tech graduate Alanza Quinones went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the win.
 
MCLA continued its strong offense with a 15-hit attack as they completed the sweep with a 10-1 win.
 
The Trailblazers improve to 6-12 overall and are now 2-4 in the MASCAC. The Buccaneers drop to 2-14 overall and are 0-6 in the conference.
 
Men's Tennis
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Down 4-3 to visiting Castleton University with just the fifth and sixth matches left to play, MCLA's Nick Castle and Mohamed Mahrous both earned three set victories to lift the Trailblazers to a hard fought 5-4 North Atlantic Conference win over the Spartans.  With the win, the Trailblazers earned their third straight victory as they improved to 3-3 overall and are 2-1 in the conference.
 
Women's Lacrosse
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Salem State jumped out to a 14-1 halftime lead and never looked back as they cruised past the MCLA Trailblazers 19-5 tonight at Shewcraft Field.
 
Chelsea and Courtney Smith each tallied six goals for the Vikings (2-9, 2-1 MASCAC).
 
Kim Granito ended with a pair of goals and two assists. Rachel Green added a pair of goals for MCLA (1-5, 0-3). Zoe Elwell took the loss in goal amassing seven saves.
