NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts senior Brittney White recently was awarded the 2017-18 Margaret A. Hart '35 Scholarship.

This scholarship honors Margaret A. Hart, Class of 1935, the first student of color to graduate from the former State Teachers College at North Adams. Her distinguished career in teaching and community service spanned more than five decades. The award is in recognition of Hart's outstanding contributions to the College and to Berkshire County.

A resident of Berkshire County for the past 16 years, White is a transfer student from Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield. She is completing her undergraduate degree in biology at MCLA. Within her biology major, White is particularly interested in genetic recombination.

In the future, White hopes to alleviate the fear and anxiety that often is associated with exploring upper-level coursework. Her dream job would combine animation and creative analogies to break down intimidating concepts, such as those found in organic chemistry.

This semester, White has explored her passion for sharing knowledge in her role as a teaching assistant for two lab sections of microbiology. She also participates in undergraduate research, which involves the isolation and identification of endosymbiont bacteria present in the sea anemone Diadumene Lineata, under the direction of biology professor Dr. Ann Billetz.

White will display her research in a poster presentation at the MCLA Undergraduate Research Conference to be held on Thursday, April 19, as well as at the Northeast Natural History Conference to be held Friday, April 13, through April 15, in Burlington, Vt.

The Margaret A. Hart '35 Scholarship is awarded to the junior or senior who demonstrates academic excellence and service to the community. Preference is given to students of color, Berkshire County residents and students earning a GPA of 3.0 or better.
