NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's lacrosse program outscored visiting MCLA 7-0 in the second half as they broke open a tie game at halftime to earn a 14-7 win over the Trailblazers Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Trailblazers fell behind early as Mitchell took a 4-0 lead out of the gates just three minutes into the game. Rachel Green ignited a run for the Trailblazers tallying three goals while Brianna Morris added another to slice the deficit to just 5-4 with 8:31 left until halftime.

 

MCLA (1-1 eventually tied the game when Morris scored back to back goals with three minutes left tying it up at 6-6. The teams would trade markers late in the half and when Andrea Villars converted a free position shot, it was 7-7 at the half.

 

From there, Mitchell (1-2) took over. It outshot MCLA, 18-5, in the second half and began to pull away.  

 

Green paced MCLA with three goals and scooped up five groundballs. She also won six draw controls.  Morris ended with three goals and four groundballs.

 

Zoe Elwell stopped 15 shots in goal for the Trailblazers.

 

MCLA is back in action on Saturday when it opens MASCAC play hosting Bridgewater at 1 p.m.

 

Baseball

SPRINGFIELD, Mass -- Three Springfield College hurlers combined on a one hitter to lead the Pride past the visiting MCLA Trailblazers, 7-0, at Barry Allen Field.

 

Springfield (11-3-2) starter Nick Naples earned the win tossing six no hit innings improving to 2-0 on the season. He worked around a pair of walks and a hit batter but kept the MCLA offense at bay. Fletcher Comment worked the next two frames surrendering one hit and working around three hit batters. Ken Manero worked a perfect ninth to close things out.

 

Pittsfield High graduate Chad Shade had a hit and scored a run for Springfield.

 

MCLA (6-4) was without a hit until the eighth inning when Drury grad Logan Rumbolt finally broke up the no hitter with a single to left field.

 

The Trailblazers are scheduled to open up MASCAC play this weekend when they take on Framingham State University.
