NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The city's preliminary election to winnow down the five mayoral candidates to two will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The last day to register to vote in the preliminary election is Wednesday, Aug. 30. The city clerk's office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday to accommodate those registering.

Absentee ballots for the preliminary election are also available in the city clerk's office during regular hours -- 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Friday from 8 to 1. Voters wishing to have ballots mailed to them must send a written request to the clerk's office, 10 Main St., North Adams. Deadline for submission of absentee ballots is Monday, Sept. 18, at noon.

The City Council last week voted to start the voting two hours earlier, the same as state and federal elections, to ensure that citizens would be able to make it to the polls.

This election will also be the first with all five wards voting at St. Elizabeth's Parish Center. Wards 1,2, 3 and 5 have been voting there for a number of years. Earlier this year, the council approved moving Ward 4 to the parish center.

The reasoning behind the move was for safety and cost effectiveness. The West End ward had been voting in Greylock School, which cased a problem during school hours.

"The school is open for elections since we use the gym, which is not segregated from classrooms," stated a letter from the Board of Registrars advocating the change. "We feel that it is putting the students at a high risk. Years back, schools were always closed on election day."
