HARTFORD, Vt. -- The North Adams SteepleCats broke up a no-hitter with one out in the top of the ninth, but came up short of a rally in a 3-1 loss to the Upper Valley Nighthawks at Maxfield Sports Complex.

Danny Wirchansky (Pace) was two outs away from a no-no before his college teammate Michael Gulino doubled.

Upper Valley scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning. Luke Reynolds (Southern Miss) singled to lead off the frame, and a two-out single from James McConnon (St. Joseph's) put runners on first and second. Cade Sorrells (Lipscomb) drove in the game's opening run with a single to center, giving the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead.

Another two-out single increased the Nighthawks lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Frankie Gregoire (Marist) doubled with two outs, and was brought in by Reynolds on a single.

From that point on, Alex Pantuso (Slippery Rock) shut down the Nighthawks at the plate, allowing just one hit in his final three innings on the mound. Pantuso posted his best outing of the season, allowing just the two runs over six quality innings in a tough-luck loss.

The Nighthawks tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sorrells continued a productive night with a leadoff double, and a bunt moved the Bison product to third. Matt Sanders (Troy) then drove in Upper Valley's final run with a one-out single.

Wirchansky took his no-hitter into the ninth inning, and retired Eddie Haus (St. Mary's) on a groundout. Against his Pace teammate, Gulino drilled a double to center field on the first pitch to end the bid for history and chase Wirchansky from the game. Dillon Paulson (USC) then doubled on the first pitch thrown by Sean Frontzak to drive in Gulino and end the shutout. Two strikeouts brought the game to an end.

North Adams continues the current road trip on Thursday night, making its second trip of the season to Mackenzie Stadium for a meeting with the Valley Blue Sox. Lanesborough's Robby Buffis (Ithaca) starts for the SteepleCats.
