KEENE, N.H. -- The North Adams SteepleCats could not overcome an early surge from the Keene Swamp Bats, and lost 12-0 in front of a capacity crowd of 4,425 at Alumni Field.

The Swamp Bats have won three straight games in the series after the 'Cats won the opener.

The Swamp Bats never trailed on Monday night, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning and again in the second. Ethan Stringer (Louisville) drilled a double to lead things off, and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nathaniel Eikhoff (Virginia). The lead was expanded to 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Takahiro Yamada (Dayton) hit a two-out solo home run, his second of the season.

Keene began to pull away with three runs in the bottom of the third. Dean Lockery (Central Connecticut State) led off the inning with a home run, and consecutive doubles by Alex Brewer (Vanderbilt) and Alex Griffith (Pittsburgh) drove in two more runs for the Swamp Bats to increase the lead to 5-0.

Five runs in the fifth inning fully put the game away for Keene. Each of the first seven hitters of the inning reached base in some capacity, with the first  ive scoring a run. The runs were driven in by Brewer on a two-run double, Hagen Holmstead (Iowa Western CC) on an RBI double, and Yamada on a two-run single.

The scoring concluded in the bottom of the eighth, when Brewer drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the game with a two-run homer.

One of the brightest spots in the losing effort for the SteepleCats was Lanesborough's Robby Buffis (Ithaca). The righthander tossed three scoreless innings after coming on during the fifth inning. Buffis allowed just one hit over his three frames, and struck out a pair of hitters.

North Adams recorded four hits on Monday night, recorded by Taylor Lane (Arizona State), Jake Ackerman (Mission College), Dillon Paulson (USC), Joe Gillette (Menlo College), and Liam Sabino (Pittsburgh). Ackerman was the most effective at the plate, reaching base twice in four plate appearances.

The SteepleCats will host the Valley Blue Sox on the Fourth of July Tuesday night, and will look to snap a two-game losing streak. Ryan Tapp (UNC-Asheville) gets the ball on Independence Day, and first pitch at Joe Wolfe Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
