NEWPORT, R.I. -- The North Adams SteepleCats rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to topple the Newport Gulls on Friday night, 9-4, at Cardines Field.

The 'Cats broke a three-game losing streak in front of more than 2,000 fans, thanks in part to two big innings and a pair of bases loaded escapes.

Newport struck first in the bottom of the third, striking their only blow against starting pitcher Alex Pantuso (Slippery Rock). Liam O'Regan (Elon) drew a walk, and took second base on a steal. After two consecutive hitters were retired, Andrew Daschbach (Stanford) and Gabe Snyder (Wright State) hit back-to-back doubles to give the Gulls the opening advantage, 2-0.

Joe Gillette (Menlo College) began the top of the third inning with a double on the first pitch of the frame. A Dillon Paulson (USC) flyout moved Gillette to third, and Ryan Schalch (Pacific) drove in the first North Adams run of the game with a groundout.

The SteepleCats then tied the game in the top of the fifth, thanks to Liam Sabino (Pittsburgh). The former Gull singled on the first pitch of the inning, and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Sabino scored after stealing third base, when the throw from the Newport catcher was errant.

Braxton Wilks (Abilene Christian) was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, inducing a pop-out followed by an inning-ending double play to second base. Wilks ended up claiming his first win of the season on the mound.

Four runs in the top of the seventh allowed North Adams to take the lead for good. The SteepleCats loaded the bases on a JJ Shimko (South Carolina Upstate) single, a Sabino hit by pitch, and a Jake Ackerman (Mission College) walk. Shimko scored on a wild pitch, and two more crossed the plate when Eddie Haus hard shot to second base was misplayed. Haus himself added the sixth North Adams run on another Newport error.

The Gulls put two on the board in the bottom of the eighth, but TJ Pagan (Pittsburgh) was able to work out of the problem with three consecutive strikeouts with the bases loaded. Newport's runs were played by Domenic DeRenzo (Oklahoma) on a walk, and Drew Arciuolo (Fairfield) on a single. Pagan earned his third save of the season for his six-out effort.

North Adams put the game away in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs. Ackerman started the inning with a double that bounced just inside the left field line before rolling out of play. A Haus bunt moved Ackerman to third before Michael Gulino (Pace) drove him in on a sacrifice fly. Gillette reached on a single, and the game's scoring ended when Paulson clubbed an inside-the-park two-run home run.

The SteepleCats return home on Saturday evening, hosting the Plymouth Pilgrims as the first game of seven home contests within the first nine days of July. Reigning national Collegiate Summer Baseball Pitcher of the Week Blake Whitney (South Carolina Upstate) will start for the SteepleCats.
