NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The North Adams SteepleCats moved into first place in the NECBL Southern Division with a 4-1 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers at Joe Wolfe Field on Sunday afternoon.

The SteepleCats have now won back-to-back games since suffering their only defeat of the season.

A pair of home runs powered the biggest inning of the game for the 'Cats, a three-run fourth. JJ Shimko (South Carolina-Upstate) powered his first home run of the season over the right field wall to lead off the inning. The next batter, Dillon Paulson (USC), followed suit by belting his first home run of the season to right-center.

The offense didn't stop there, as Bryce Peterson (UCF) singled and stole second base, leading to an RBI double by Liam Sabino (Pittsburgh). Peterson and Shimko each had two hits in the victory, leading the SteepleCat attack. Peterson also came up with a major defensive play, throwing out Jesse Forstell at the plate to save a run in the third.

North Adams extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, without the benefit of a hit. Paulson drew his sixth walk of the season, and moved to third base on a wild pitch and a flyout. Paulson then scored his second run of the game on another wild pitch from Vermont reliever Reese Robinson.

Vermont's biggest threat in the contest came in the top of the seventh. Three walks and a double (with a double play erasing one of the runners) loaded the bases for the Mountaineers with two outs. Adbel Guadalupe then drew a walk to force in Davis Mikell for the first Vermont run. TJ Pagan (Pittsburgh) entered the game after the walk, and struck out Michael Hartnagle to end the frame. Pagan worked 2-1/3 scoreless frames to pick up the first SteepleCat save of the season.

Robert Donnelly (SUNY Oswego) became the first NECBL pitcher to win two games this season, tossing five shutout frames with just three hits allowed. The loss was charged to Vermont starter Ryan Fernandez, who exited after four innings of work.

The SteepleCats will continue their three game homestand on Monday, as the Valley Blue Sox come to town for the first time this season after their first scheduled showing was rained out. Blake Whitney (South Carolina Upstate) makes his second start of the season for the 'Cats after striking out eight over six innings on Opening Night.
