Featuring works by 20 artists, join us for the opening reception of Babel’s Bricks. The first of three exhibitions curated by Corwin Levi this summer.
Remember, as a kid, when you played with toy blocks? Old wooden blocks, Erector sets, Lincoln Logs, Legos, or Mine Craft filled countless hours of childhood afternoons and summer vacations. Artists have continued to nurture the impulse of putting parts together to make a more wonderful whole. Lines make a drawing, strokes make a painting, pieces make a sculpture, and seconds stacked on seconds make a video. What if, though, artists created works AS the building blocks? For Babel’s Bricks, artists in a variety of media are interpreting the idea of artwork as building block. Additionally, there will be a component of the show in which viewers can construct their own works out of a selection of various blocks. By putting these disparate construction elements into a whole, the show will remind us that an aggregate of various systems has the power to be greater than its parts, whether individually or in sum.

We’re doubling in size beginning May 28, with an all-day celebration to mark the monumental expansion, featuring a members’ preview, a Soundsuit parade, and a concert with veteran rockers CAKE.
MASS MoCA launches into the summer season with the opening of Building 6, the third phase of campus development that encompasses 130,000 square feet of interior renovations to the museum’s 19th-century mill buildings, and features work from artists Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, James Turrell, Jenny Holzer, Laurie Anderson, and Gunnar Schonbeck (Bang on a Can). Additional artists to be shown in Building 6 include Spencer Finch, Dawn DeDeaux, Lonnie Holley, Mary Lum, Barbara Ernst Prey, Janice Kerbel, Joe Wardwell, Sarah Crowner, Richard Nonas, and the Optics Division of the Metabolic Studio. |

A Thursday evening Chinese language and culture program at the North Adams Public Library will offer a 30-minute instruction to children from K-4th grade. Siblings are welcome. The aim is for children to acquire some basic knowledge of Chinese language through a fun learning process. Children will learn how to read and write some Chinese characters, sing songs, and do projects. The program will also integrate Chinese cultural components along with the language. Instructor Ms. Wan is a Chinese language teacher. She has been teaching Chinese to children from Pre-K to elementary school for over 10 years. The spring program will run for 5 weeks on Thursday evenings from May 4th –June 1st 6:00-6:30 p.m. in the Youth Services Department. This is a drop-in program. Local herbalist and holistic chef Shannon Toye will overview the basics of local medicinal plants, including when to harvest, how to use plant medicine to strengthen your immune system and create balance between your body systems.
There will be samples on hand and we will use locally wild harvested plants to make the traditional folk remedy, fire cider, which you will be able to take home with you.
