NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Two days of girls hockey action concluded Sunday afternoon with a victory for the home team.
But the Berkshire Blizzard was a winner in more ways than one.
“This is huge,” Blizzard coach Bill Rech said after the team wrapped up the inaugural Blizzard Bash at the Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Rink. “This is so important because it's a chance for more and more families who couldn't travel with us to come and see them play.
“The different youth hockey programs had some people here and had a chance to see this is what this girls hockey thing is all about. They had a blast watching.”
And the girls on the Blizzard roster had a blast playing against the visitors from Brattleboro, Vt., and Amherst who made their way to the Steeple City for the event.
“It was a very successful weekend,” Rech said. “It was our first go around trying to get enough teams out. We got Amherst, and Brattleboro was kind enough because they have a pretty big roster, to split into two teams, which gave us four. Each team got to play each other once.
“It was a great opening ceremony. The mayor was here, which was fantastic.”
The first-year Blizzard team won its opener over Brattleboro’s No. 1 squad on Saturday morning, dropped a narrow 3-1 decision to Amherst Saturday and rebounded to top Brattleboro’s second squad, 3-0, on Sunday behind a goal and two assists from Abby Farrington.
“Our girls came so far this year, so far,” Rech said. “From our first game where we were trying to figure out who each other were to what you saw today, which was rapid-fire passes, really clean passing.”
Although Sunday’s game marked the end of the 2016-17 season for the Blizzard, the team hopes to keep providing opportunities to get on the ice.
“We'll take a couple of weeks for a break and then get into a practice schedule for the summer,” Rech said. “Both Brattleboro and Amherst said they'd come out and practice with us. And we'll pick it up again next season.”
