MCLA Women's Tennis Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- The MCLA women's tennis team kept its NAC playoff hopes alive by virtue of an 8-1 win over Thomas (Maine) Saturday evening in a match played at the Bennington Tennis Center.
 
With the win, MCLA improves to 6-4 overall and are 4-2 in the league.  Thomas drops to 3-7 overall and is 2-4 in the league.
 
MCLA (6-4, 4-2)  will need to defeat Husson Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Bennington to keep its playoff hopes alive.
 
The Trailblazers swept the doubles matches as Emily Deaso and Williamstown’s Mariza Sfakianaki won 8-6 to earn the first point. Sarah Hachadourian and Briana Higgins won 8-4 in the second slot before Anna Despart and Sam Gawron rolled to an 8-0 win giving the Trailblazers the early edge. 
 
Sfakianaki earned her second point of the day in the top singles slot 8-2 while Despart took the third slot by the same score.  Gawron, Higgins, and Shelby Gauthier all won convincingly as they took 8-0 decisions to close out the match for MCLA.
 
The NAC playoffs are held next Saturday and MCLA is currently ahead of fourth place Castleton as the Spartans are finished at 4-3. An MCLA win Sunday will assure it a playoff berth next weekend.
 
Cross Country
KEENE, N.H. -- The MCLA men's and women's cross country programs competed Saturday afternoon in the Keene State invitational.
 
The women's team finished in seventh place while the men came in eighth.
 
In the women's race, MCLA was paced by Annie Gagnon who finished 33rd. Close behind her was Kaitlin Wright and Jordan DeGaetano in 35th and 39th, respectively.  Kaitlyn Gevry and Katelyn Henault also competed for MCLA.
 
In the men's race, the Blazers were paced by Avery Woodbury's 36th place finish. Jeremiah Jones was 42nd while Paul Davila was 46th. Also competing for MCLA was Joe Wiggins and Travis Rice.
 
The Trailblazers will run next weekend in the James Early invitational at Westfield State.
 
Volleyball
NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- The MCLA women's volleyball team wrapped up a road trip with a sweep in today's tri match hosted by Mount Saint Mary's.
 
The Trailblazers defeated William Patterson, 3-2, and then took care of the hosts, 3-1, in the finale.
 
Allison Clark was outstanding notching 43 kills on the afternoon including a career best 32 in the opening win over WPU.
 
MCLA (9-9) took care of the Pioneers after dropping the first two sets. It fell behind, 25-22, 25-23, before rallying to take the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-17 and 27-25. The Trailblazers closed out the win by winning the decisive fifth set, 15-9.
 
Clark notched her 32 kills on just 54 attacks. She added a team best 22 digs as well. Rebecca Godbout added 11 kills while Beatrice Lechler racked up a career high 47 assists. Taylor Wiese chipped in with 21 assists while Chanielle Enomoto had 20 digs in the win.
 
In the nightcap, MCLA took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-21, before falling 25-17 in the third.  They closed out MSMC, 28-26, in the fourth set.
 
Clark had 11 kills and nine digs in the win while Casey Malzahn added seven kills. Lechler and Wiese combined for 36 assists.
 
The Trailblazers return home on Tuesday night when they host Sage in non conference action.
 
Women’s Soccer
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA women's soccer team fell, 5-0, to conference foe Westfield State Saturday afternoon at Schewcraft field.
 
The first half was dominated by the Owls (4-6, 2-1 MASCAC). Confusion after a cross lead to senior midfielder Taylor Grijalva's first goal of the year in the 13th minute. Later in the half, off of a rebound senior forward Kate Matroni scored her fourth goal of the year in the 23rd minute. Just a minute later, driving down the field, freshman midfielder Bella Eduardoscored her third goal of the year in the 24th minute.
 
The second half proved to be more of the same. The Owls would score two more goals. On another confusing play, Grijalva scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute. Just outside the 18, another goal was scored by freshman forward Alyssa Richard in the 85th minute, it was her first of the year and her career.
 
Senior goalie Kathryn Daly came in relief at the start of the second half and gave a strong performance. Daly stopped a penalty shot in the 52nd minute from senior fullback Shannon McCleary, as well as making two more saves in the 66th and 85th minute.
 
MCLA (2-4-3, 0-2-1) is back in action at Schewcraft field against Western New England at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.
 
Men’s Soccer
WESTFIELD, Mass. - MCLA senior forward Jesse Moore notched the game-winning goal just seconds into the second overtime period in lifting the Trailblazers past the Westfield State Owls, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in Men's Soccer.
 
Trailblazers senior Anthony Basile scored 13 minutes, 33 seconds  into the first half of the game off a free kick in center field resulting in a 1-0 MCLA lead.
 
Down the stretch, Westfield State's sophomore Brodie Keene trickled a shot past junior goalkeeper Kamron Anderson after an assist by senior Joey Pantuosco to knot the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute.
 
It wasn't until double overtime and the 100th minute of the match, when Trailblazers' senior Jesse Moore made a diving header from the right side of the field shooting the ball into the net resulting in a 2-1 final score.
 
MCLA (5-4-1, 2-0-1 MASCAC) led 20-7 in total shots, 11-4 shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks.
 
Owls' keeper Alex Kraver played 100 minutes, making nine saves on the day and allowing one goal. Junior goalkeeper Marc Patnaude played the last 15 minutes and allowed one goal in net.
 
Anderson played all 110 minutes of the game and made three saves and allowed one goal for the Trailblazers.
 
MCLA hosts Worcester State Friday at 6 p.m.
