NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Hoosac Valley High School graduate and New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Tanner Bird earned his eighth save of the year on Wednesday in a 2-0 North Adams SteepleCats win over the Upper Valley Nighthawks at Joe Wolfe Field.

After Tuesday night’s loss, the SteepleCats (15-13) were determined to bounce back. They were able to do exactly that by manufacturing a run in the second and a run in the third. That was all they needed against the Nighthawks (10-17) as North Adams moved into a tie for first place in the Northern Division.

Starter Ben Olson went seven innings and allowed two hits without giving up a run.  He also recorded six strikeouts on the night. Brian Stepniak came on in relief in the eighth and struck out the side. Bird came on and pitched a three up three down ninth recording save number eight on the year to close out the win. The ‘Cats pitching staff combined to not allow a hit in the final six innings of the game.

The ‘Cats will hit the road on Thursday to take on the Ocean State Waves (17-11). The ‘Cats will return to Joe Wolfe Field Friday night against the Valley Blue Sox (14-13). First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
