NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The North Adams SteepleCats (14-13) were coming a big road win VS the Plymouth Pilgrims (12-15) on Monday and were looking forward to returning home for the first time in seven days Tuesday night.
The game ended up not going the SteepleCats way in 14-1 loss to the Newport Gulls (15-14) at Joe Wolfe Field. It was the second time the Gulls have beaten the SteepleCats this season.
The Gulls jumped on the SteepleCats in the third inning and did not look back, scoring nine runs against ‘Cats starter Peter Lannoo. All nine runs came with two outs and eight of the nine were unearned. The Gulls continued to pour it on, pushing across three insurance runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth against ‘Cats reliever Robbie Buffis.
Buffis, who is normally a starter, pitched five innings in relief and gave up five runs off of ten hits, walked four, and struck out one.
The Gulls got a dominant performance out of their starter Hunter Schryver. He allowed only one run off of two hits through seven innings and recorded seven strikeouts to only one walk.
The SteepleCats will return to action Wednesday night against the Upper Valley Nighthawks (10-16) at Joe Wolfe Field. The ‘Cats will hand the ball to Ben Olson (1-1, 3.25) to face Houston Mabray (1-2, 7.97) for the Nighthawks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
