NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — You know it's summer in the city when the beach returns to Eagle Street.
The Eagle Street Beach Party returns for its 18th year of building sand castles on the historic byway; and for the seventh year, the adults-only Mexican Fiesta takes over the party for an evening of margaritas and volleyball.
This year's event is Friday, July 15, with a rain date of July 22.
Originated by artist Eric Rudd in 1999, the beach party has become a summer staple for creative fun in the sand. This event is a great family experience and everyone, young and young-at-heart, are invited to participate. There will be prizes for all sand sculpture participants during the family event from 3:30 to 6:30.
At 7 p.m., the adult games take over with margaritas and Corona beer available from Desparados, food from local eateries, and live music with singer Lita Williams for dancing the night away - or at least until 10 p.m.
Eagle Street merchants and other businesses have contributed sand toys and prizes, as well as prizes for the most creative sand castles or sand sculptures to be created during Rudd's annual Community Sculpture event. Now sponsored by the Rudd Foundation's Berkshire Art Museum, some 500,000 pounds of sand donated by Specialty Minerals will be spread - curb to curb - the entire length of downtown Eagle Street. The sand is later used by the city for playgrounds and the Windsor Lake beaches.
Mildred Elley School's Pittsfield Campus has generously donated 300 sand pails and shovels free for all participants to use and keep; Adams Community Bank and Smith Watson & Co. CPAs are contributing the entertainment and out-of-pocket expenses for both events.
Jack's Hot Dogs has donated 60 gift certificates good for one hot dog and other merchants are giving gifts and certificates to their stores. First Baptist Church will be giving away free ice cream cones and 250 Steeplecats tickets will be distributed to children ages 12 and younger. Several not-for-profit groups will also be on hand giving away toys to children.
Beach attire is recommended; food color dye is acceptable for sculptures but no spray paint. This event is non-smoking.
Volunteers are needed to help spread the sand at starting at 1:30 p.m. on Friday; shovels provided, just show up.
