NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Newport Gulls snapped North Adams’ three-game winning streak with an 11-4 win on Wednesday in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
Steeplecats starter Patrick Ryan lasted four innings, giving up five runs off eight hits, striking out four. The big dagger was the Gulls’ ability to hit three home runs off of him, four for the game, and a total of 15 hits.
The ‘Cats were still able to keep their bats going scoring four runs off six hits against Gulls starter Kris Bubic. Keaton Wright continued his hot start to the season going 2-for-4 with a single, a double, and two runs scored. Nick Riotto added three hits on the game for the ‘Cats.
Bubic lasted five innings and struck out seven. Jake Cousins came on to pitch the final four innings in relief for the Gulls. He also struck out seven and was able to shut out the ‘Cats for the rest of the game closing out the victory for Newport.
The SteepleCats will take Thursday off and return to action Friday night against the Upper Valley Nighthawks in White River Junction, Vt. Ben Olson (0-0, 3.37 ERA) will get his second start of the season. The ‘Cats will return to Joe Wolfe Field Saturday evening for a 6:30 first pitch against the Keene Swamp Bats.
