PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Family YMCA announces open registrations for its American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class.
A free required Pre-Course Swim Test will be held on March 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Pittsfield Branch and April 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Northern Berkshire Branch.
Participants will learn lifeguarding skills with the waterfront module, how to perform CPR on an adult, child and infant, how to use an AED, and necessary first-aid skills. Upon successful course completion, participants will be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Waterfront Module, American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Lifeguard, and American Red Cross Basic First Aid.
Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of the class. All participants must pass the free Pre-Course Swim Test. Participants must be able to pass all prerequisite swimming skills: 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl and/or breaststroke; tread water continuously for two minutes keeping head above water; swim 20 yards; retrieve 10 lb. object from a depth of 7 to 10 feet; and swim 20 yards and exit water without use of ladder.
After passing the test, participants then can register for the class at the Y. The Pittsfield Branch required classes meet Monday through Friday, April 4-8, from 3:30-7 p.m. and Saturday, April 9, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The Northern Berkshire Branch required classes meet Saturday through Monday, April 16-18, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with one-hour lunch. Class participants will receive a CPR resuscitation mask and whistle. The cost is $200; financial assistance is available.
Certified lifeguards are needed at the Y’s Pittsfield & Northern Berkshire Branches, Berkshire Community College, Berkshire Hills and Windsor Lake.
