The Studios at MASS MoCA - Studio Residency Program - Apply by January 15
MASS MoCA invites artists and writers to apply for professional development residencies from 1 week to 10 weeks in length.
Residents will receive:
-
A private studio in attractive space on MASS MoCA’s re-purposed mill campus, with generous natural light, 24-hour studio access, plywood floors, a work table and chair in each studio, and shared slop sinks and bathrooms
-
Housing across the street from the museum, in newly renovated apartments (private bedroom/Queen bed + shared kitchen and bath). These are lovely apartments, but note that it’s communal living (4 people to an apartment) in an active downtown location

One communal meal per day, in the company of 7 other artists-in-residence.

MASS MoCA member benefits for the duration of the residency, including free access to the museum’s galleries and discounts on performing arts events and museum store purchases.

Free access to Makers’ Mill, a printmaking and fiber arts makerspace on Main Street in North Adams (a short walk from the museum), offering shared use of letterpress, silkscreen and book-making equipment, as well as looms, sewing machines and work tables.

Optional one-on-one artist-focused financial and business counseling through MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program (www.assetsforartists.org) that helps artists and writers in all disciplines strengthen the business side of their artistic practice.

The Northern Berkshire community will once again gather together to discuss important issues facing its residents at our monthly forum on Friday, January 15, 2016. Berkshire County is the recipient of The Rural Health Network Development Planning Grant designed to expand access to, coordinate and improve health care delivery in rural areas. Join us for the second of two sessions on this topic. Last November we focused on “Community Health Needs” and this session, to be held on January 15th, will focus on “Solutions”, featuring the new Community Heath Worker Corps and the critical role they are playing to improve the overall heath status of our community.
What to expect:
• Learn about the concept of “Population Health” and how it is measured by the County Health Ranking process.
• Hear about the recent and ongoing health improvement initiatives in Northern Berkshire, including our corps of Community Health Workers.
• Help shape the plan to continue to improve the health of our community. |

Youth and youth groups, in particular this year, are encouraged to participate. All volunteers are urged to pre-register for the service task they would like to take part in.
• On-site projects at the MCLA Church Street Center include mitten making, a quilting project, a discussion of recent national events entitled “Prejudice and Privilege,” assembling military care boxes, putting together meal kits for later distribution by local food pantries to those in need, blanket tying, and making Valentines cards and gifts for the elderly in a local nursing home.
• Off-site volunteer locations include the Adams Youth Center, the First Baptist Church in North Adams, the Friendship Food Pantry, Stop and Shop, Good Will, Louison House, Williamstown First Congregational Church, the North Adams YMCA, and local homes in need of winterization. In addition, there will be a special project with Alex Daugherty, that involves light carpentry work for a local family in need, and/or or moving items to benefit a local, future teen center.
• In addition to the volunteer service projects, a free community lunch and celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. in the MCLA Church Street Center. The program will include the presentation of this year’s MLK Peacemaker Award to PopCares, Inc. The afternoon program at the MCLA Church Street Center will include speakers such as MCLA Interim President James Clemmer, North Adams Mayor Dick Alcombright, State Rep. Gailanne Cariddi, D-North Adams, and State Sen. Ben Downing, D-Pittsfield. In addition, there will be performances by local groups.
Those who do not pre-register for a service project at http://berkshirenonprofits.com should sign in at 9 a.m. in the MCLA Church Street Center, where coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be served. A welcome will take place at 9:30 a.m., before participants are directed to their on-site or off-site service assignments. |

We’ll be bringing in local models and a local, figure drawing instructor who will drop-in as available. Get in as at the ground level to shape the direction this collective takes. Bring your own lap board, paper, pencils, and creative energy! |

The Drury High School Band is currently holding its annual Little Caesars Pizza Kits Fundraiser. Band members and band parents will be taking orders for various sizes of pizza kits until February 10th. The scheduled delivery date is March 3rd. The Pizza kits are frozen for easy storage, come in a variety of sizes and flavors, and contain all the ingredients for a delicious and convenient meal. All proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will go directly to help fund the band’s trip to the July 4th 2016 parade in Washington , DC. The eye catching Cable Mills project on Water Street is moving swiftly along. At a Williamstown Historical Museum roundtable, questions about the building’s history will be answered. What was this mill like during its early and prime industrial days, and what was like for workers during Cornish Wire’s tenure at the site' Scheduled speakers include Cece Holm, a skilled volunteer historian and Williams alum; Marc Toureille, a 38-year factory employee and union organizer; Dave Traggorth a Cable Mills project representative and experienced adaptive reuse project manager; and Paul Harsch a local real estate broker and history buff who will help put the story of the into context within community development. The museum is located inside the David & Joyce Milne Public Library at 1095 Main St.

Spark!Lab at the Berkshire Museum will celebrate kids and their inventions as part of Kid Inventors’ Day. For this day of special hands-on challenges, kids are invited to prototype inventive solutions to local and global problems with a focus on health issues. Spark!Lab hosts will be on hand to share the accomplishments of notable kid inventors, from Benjamin Franklin in the 1700s to today’s Param Jaggi, a young man who invented a device to control harmful exhaust emissions in automobiles before he was old enough to drive! Admission is $13 adult, $6 child; children age 3 and under enjoy free admission.
