MCLA Men, Women Both Edged in League Openers

WORCESTER, Mass. - In a game that featured a pair of big second half runs, Worcester State reeled off a 31-10 spurt over the final 8 minutes, 48 seconds to pull away from a stubborn MCLA men's basketball team in a 77-61 victory in the MASCAC opener for both teams.
 
The game was played at Clark University and the Lancers improve to 9-5 overall (1-0 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers drop to 4-8 (0-1 MASCAC).
 
For the Trailblazers (4-8, 0-1), Paul Maurice scored a team best 15 points off the bench on 6-13 shooting.  Ki-Shawn Monroe had his best game of his young career logging 11 points and dishing off four assists. Khalil Paul added 12 points for MCLA.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Westfield seeking their first conference victory.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester State's Kaitlyn Berkel knocked down a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining and visiting MCLA's final shot rimmed out as the Lancers held off the Trailblazers 48-46 in the MASCAC opener for both teams.
 
The game was played at Clark University as the Lancers improve to 4-8 (1-0 MASCAC) on the season.  MCLA drops to 8-4 (0-1 MASCAC) overall.
 
MCLA (8-4, 0-1) were paced by Kayla Hotaling's 13-point effort, but she was just 6-16 from the floor. MCLA got a nice spark of the bench from Samantha Gawron as she connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the third period for her nine points.
 
MCLA will look to break into the win column on Saturday when it travels to Westfield State.
