NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Voters returned Richard Alcombright to the mayor's office for a fourth two-year term. Alcombright bested John Barrett III,former 13-term mayor, by 376 votes, less than half the margin when he first beat him 2009.

Voting is also heavy in Ward 4 at Greylock School, with 627 votes cast shortly after 2 p.m. The number of registered voters is 8,691, almost a 150 more new voters than in September's preliminary. BCAC vans has been providing rides to the polls in a number of neighborhoods.

Voting has been heavy in the city, which opened its polls at 7 a.m. today, giving voters more time to cast ballots.

Shortly after noon, the numbers were at or ahead of total votes cast in Wards 1, 2 and 3 in the preliminary election that saw a field of three mayoral candidates trimmed to incumbent Richard Alcombright and former mayor John Barrett III. Some 2,432 ballots were cast in September, or about 28 percent of registered voters.

By 1 p.m. on Tuesday, four of the city's wards had toted up nearly 1,600 votes.

Election worker Ron O'Brien at St. Elizabeth's Parish, where Wards 1, 2, 3 and 5 are located, said turnout had been steady, with several rushes, but he had expected more.

"They all had lines at one time," he said. "But I thought we would have lines for most of the day."

Outside, both mayoral candidates stood with a cluster of supporters waving signs, along with some of the 12 City Council candidates and four School Committee candidates.

Barrett was greeted several times but didn't want to read to much into it.

"It's hard to tell," he said. "I think they're appreciative of everybody running and they're being polite .. and I think that's a good sign."

The 13-term former mayor was confident his campaign had been positive and on message, saying he'd "never run a better campaign since I've run for any office."

"If negativity rules the day then we lose, plain and simple as that."

Across the driveway, Alcombright, seeking a fourth two-year term, said he was pleased that many parents seemed to have taken advantage of the early morning voting and brought their children along.

"It's a beautiful day and turnout has been good and we certainly feel a  heavy turnout favors us," he said. "We're really hopeful we'll see a heavy turnout after 3 p.m.
