To the Editor:

A few years ago, we approached Mayor Alcombright to discuss smoking in playgrounds. He thanked us for contacting him and suggested we reach out to the Board of Health because cigarette smoking was a high concern of its members as well.

This was exactly the response that was needed. Mayor Alcombright recognized our issue and directed us to the board handling this issue as well as other agencies in the region - Mass in Motion, Tri-Town Health, and the Family Resource Center at Child Care of the Berkshires.

Together, we developed an awareness campaign and started a "young lungs at play" sticker initiative to reduce smoking in playgrounds. This work culminated with no smoking signs in city parks by the Board of Health. We witnessed leadership at its finest. Mayor Alcombright brought us into the fold, offered resources, and allowed us to be part of the solution.

One person in the corner office is not going to singularly solve every issue. It takes all of us working together to make our city a livable and enjoyable one. The city's Vision 2030 is a great place to start. It is the work of many and represents our shared future. We know that Alcombright's administration will continue this vision. Mayor Alcombright has shown us that he is available, allows collaborative decision making, and encourages each of us to make a contribution.

Please make your contribution and vote Nov. 3 for Mayor Alcombright.
