MCLA Harriers Compete in Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The MCLA men's cross country program ran in the annual James Early Invitational this morning at Stanley Park in Westfield.
 
The Trailblazers finished 26th in the 38 team field.  
 
The event was won by Union College.  The College of Saint Rose was second followed by Westfield State University.
 
Justin Zorn of Union won the 8k race with a time of 25:53.
 
MCLA was paced by Christopher Gamble's 82nd place finish. It's the fourth consecutive race in which Gamble has led the team.
 
Fellow first year runner Ryan McMahon was next across for MCLA followed by Adam Sleezer.
 
The Trailblazers will run again next weekend at the Western New England Invite.
 
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
WESTFIELD, Mass. - The MCLA women's cross country team resumed their season today running in the annual James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State University.
 
MCLA finished the 35th place.
 
The University of New England took home top team honors while Williams College was second followed by Saint Anslem's in third.
 
Abby Shafer of UNE was the top finisher covering the 5k course in 18 minutes, 4 seconds.
 
MCLA was paced by Paige Herzog who finished in 189th place. The field featured 39 programs from across New England.
 
Following Herzog across the line was Annie Gagnon and Kaitlin Wright.
 
The Trailblazers will continue their season next Saturday at Western New England.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The visiting Worcester State women's soccer team received goals from three different players as they remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0 victory over MCLA at Shewcraft Field.
 
The Lancers (3-0-1, 6-4-2 MASCAC) struck twice in the opening half after MCLA (1-10, 0-4) had a few chances early in the contest. In the 20th minute, WSU's Kendal Bergenholtz pushed a cross into the middle of the box that Tsara Leblanc headed home giving the Lancers an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Leblanc's fifth of the season.
 
The Trailblazers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Nichols College at 4p p.m.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
WORCESTER, Mass. - The MCLA men's soccer team led 2-0 at halftime but the host Worcester State Lancers rallied for a come from behind 3-2 overtime victory over the Trailblazers in MASCAC action Saturday afternoon.
 
Worcester State's Bryan Brasil scored the equalizer and the game winner just 1 minute, 18 seconds into OT.
 
The Lancers (4-6-1, 2-2) earned their second straight conference victory
 
Trailblazer sophomore Kwadwo Kusi got things headed in the right direction early for MCLA (2-6-2, 1-3) as he tallied a pair of first half goals. The first marker came in the 14th minute when Sean Kenney sent a cross that found Kusi in the box and he converted for a 1-0 lead. He struck again in the 29th minute, this time unassisted as his shot caromed off a Lancer defender and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Lancers did a complete turnaround in the second half. They immediately got on the board just two minutes in to the closing half on a George Siotis goal. He converted when WSU threw the ball into the box and Bryan Brasil headed it towards Siotis for the marker slicing the lead to just 2-1.
 
The hosts controlled the play, but ultimately couldn't convert until the 83rd minute.  Brasil netted the tying goal when Jacob Jess sent a through ball past the defense and Brasil beat Kamron Anderson to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained that way until overtime.
 
In OT, Brasil didn't wait long to finish it off. Just 1:18 into the extra period, he corralled a cross from Ryan Kinsella and blasted a shot from 10 yards out that beat Anderson and ended the game.
 
MCLA will have a quick turnaround as it hosts Mount Saint Vincent on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Shewcraft Field.
 
GOLF
RUTLAND, Vt. - The MCLA golf team finished up play this morning in the final round of the 2015 NAC Championships held at Rutland Country Club.  The Trailblazers finished in sixth place in the conference championship.
 
Husson University won the team competition besting Salem State and earning the automatic bid into the division III NCAA golf championships.
 
Husson's Greg Martin claimed the individual title by virtue of shooting a 71 on Saturday for a two day total of 144 (plus-4).  
 
The Trailblazers actually bested their opening round score by a wide margin as they closed with a 365, or 25 shots better than the first round.  Young played steady all weekend as he followed up an opening 83 with a second round 80 to climb into the top ten. He finished ninth.
 
Cooper Gavin and Sam Slocombe tied for 28th with two day totals of 190.
