MCLA Women's Tennis Earns Key Win on Road

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The MCLA women's tennis team earned an important 7-2 win over Thomas College Saturday afternoon as they kept its NAC playoff hopes alive.
 
The Trailblazers evened their NAC mark at 3-3 and will have to defeat Husson Sunday to have a chance at the postseason.
 
The Trailblazers got off to a solid start sweeping the doubles play. Emily Deaso teamed with Williamstown's Mariza Sfakianaki to win 8-5 in the top slot. Taylor Turner and Shelby Gauthier won the second doubles match also by an 8-5 score, while the duo of Anna Despart and Rebecca Waterhouse won 8-3.
 
With a 3-0 lead heading into singles, MCLA secured the match victory by winning the first two points. Deaso collected her second point of the day by defeating Lindsey Allen 6-2, 7-5.  Kylie Dumas clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the sixth slot over Rachel Gillis.
 
Over Trailblazers earning singles points were Sfakianaki and Despart to account for the final score.
 
The Trailblazers will have to defeat Husson on Sunday to qualify for the NAC postseason tournament next weekend. The top four teams in the conference qualify.
 
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The MCLA volleyball team dropped a pair of games to close out the Hartwick tournament Saturday afternoon. 
 
MCLA fell to Hartwick 3-1 in the opener while losing a five setter 3-2 to Morrisville State.  The Trailblazers are now 14-6 on the season.
 
In the opener against Hartwick, MCLA dropped the first set 25-22 before winning the second 25-20. The Hawks then closed out the Trailblazers by winning 25-17 and 25-18 to secure the win.  
 
MCLA was paced on offense by Allison Clark's 8 kills. She added 10 digs as well. Chanielle Enomoto led the defense with 16 digs while Brittney Pihl had 13 off the bench.  Courtney Parent finished with 8 assists and 10 digs to go along with eight service aces.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The MCLA women's soccer team went on the road for a matchup with MASCAC foe Westfield State Saturday morning and dropped a 4-0 decision as the Owls stayed perfect in MASCAC play.
 
Westfield State midfielder Kate Matroni  led the way with two goals, while freshman midfielder Lexi Kulik picked up two assists.  The Owls (5-4, 3-0 outshot the Trailblazers 17-4 in the game. MCLA (1-8, 0-3) couldn't get a shot off in the entire second half.
 
MCLA travels to Western New England on Wednesday.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The visiting Westfield State men's soccer team received goals from three different players as it defeated the MCLA Trailblazers 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
 
Westfield (3-6-1, 3-0 MASCAC) didn't take long to get on the scoreboard as it tallied in the second minute of action. Sean Lathrop knocked home a Zack Horn feed to give the Owls an early 1-0 advantage just 1:49 into the contest. The Owls controlled the opening half, outshooting MCLA 12-3, however the score remained just 1-0 heading into halftime.
 
After intermission, Westfield took a 2-0 lead when Legend Mu'Min tallied unassisted in the 53rd minute. The Trailblazers (2-5-2, 1-2)showed signs of life just five minutes later when Edward Boateng would score in the 58th minute slicing the deficit in half at 2-1 with plenty of time to play.
 
In the 81st minute, Westfield Stae's Connor Gilbert scored off a Brodie Keene feed
 
Kamron Anderson collected nine saves in a losing effort for MCLA.
 
MCLA returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Worcester State.
