Spring Prescription Drug Take Back Day Set for April 25
12:53PM / Wednesday, April 22, 2015
Print | Email

This spring, community coalitions from across the county have joined forces to host the biannual prescription drug take back day on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be seven locations across the county.

Anyone with unused, unwanted and expired prescription, over-the-counter and controlled medications should stop by to dispose of them safely. Personal use needles are accepted, but only in puncture proof plastic containers. Because the aim is to collect prescriptions, the locations cannot accept thermometers, IV bags, blood or infectious waste, nebulizers, and oxygen tanks.

For northern Berkshire County, the Rx Round Up will occur at the Adams Police Station, the North Adams Police Station and the Berkshire Mall Food Court. In central Berkshire County, medications can be dropped off at the Dalton CRA (400 Main St.), The Lee Ambulance Service (177 Main St.), and the CHP Neighborhood Health Center in Pittsfield (510 North St). Finally, South County residents can stop by the Stockbridge Police Station.

This year’s prescription drug round up is a continuation of year round efforts to curb prescription drug abuse.  Across the county there are 10 boxes that serve as drop off sites for unwanted, unused or expired medications.

Flushing medications is considered harmful to the water supply, and throwing them out in the trash is not advisable unless they are mixed with kitty litter or coffee grounds to make them less appealing. Apart from this spring’s round up, the drop box is an easy and accessible way to get rid of unused medication safely. It is highly encouraged that everyone disposes of unwanted drugs throughout the year and does not save them for collection days to reduce the risk of inappropriate use. While prescriptions are in the household, they should always be locked up and made inaccessible.

The drop boxes can be reached at any time throughout the week. They are located inside police stations in Adams, North Adams, Williamstown, Dalton, Egremont, Pittsfield, Great Barrington, Lee, Lenox and Sheffield.
