Hosted by Craig Harris, a contemporary and longtime collaborator with Sundiata. Harris will share stories of Sundiata's creative process and demonstrate the unique relationship between spoken word and music. MCLA students as well as voices from our local community will present original works, this evening is in remembrance of poet Sekou Sundiata. Sundiata was a Harlem born, African American poet, activist and performer. The sound of Sundiata's voice became iconic as his words were always full of honesty, warm-heartedness, comedy, righteous anger, and longing.

Berkshire Family and Individual Resources will host its annual meeting at the Williams Inn.  The breakfast will include the presentation of several awards for employee recognition, as well as the recognition of the community employer of the year.  Additionally, the chairman of the Board will offer remarks on the organization’s continued success and growth through 2014. The keynote address at the meeting will be offered by John Anton. Anton is a young man with Down Syndrome who a self-advocate and a legislative specialist with the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress. His address for the April event is titled “My Journey to Independence.”  In addition to the keynote address at the breakfast, he will facilitate an additional breakout session from 10 a.m. to noon, also at the Williams Inn. The session will focus on self-determination and legislative advocacy. Service providers and community members are encouraged to attend. To attend the annual meeting and/or the breakout session, RSVP by April 10th to Carol Fox at 413-664-9382 ext. 40 or cfox@bfair.org.  A suggested donation of $10 may be made at the door.

The return of Jeff Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel — who influenced a generation of songwriters with a string of records in the ‘90s, culminating with In the Aeroplane Over the Sea — is one of the most welcome re-births in the history of indie music. Mangum was here in 2013 in what was one of his first shows in over a decade. This time he’s back with the whole band.
On Friday, April 17, the museum galleries will be open until 7pm. Neutral Milk Hotel ticket-holders who visit the galleries on Friday or Saturday may purchase admission for $10.

BMC Offers Free Pre-Diabetes Education Sessions

2 to 3:30 PM

The sessions are designed for those whose physician have told them their blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be considered diabetes, for people who have been told they are at risk for diabetes or who are 45 years or older and have an inactive or history of gestational diabetes. Clark House at the Northern Berkshire YMCA, Brickyard Court in North Adams. Jan Salzer, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, will present the North Adams classes.
