MCLA Men's Tennis Wins, Women's Lax Falls

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The MCLA men's tennis team swept the doubles matches on their way to a 6-3 win over Becker College in a match played at Berkshire West in Pittsfield on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Trailblazers earned their first victory of the season and improve to 1-4 overall. Becker dropped to 2-2 with the setback.
 
MCLA's Rob Wabshinak, Taylor Krowitz, and Tyler Russell each earned a pair of points to pace the hosts.
 
Wabshinak teamed with Aaron Goldsmith to earn a key point in the top doubles slot 9-8 over the Becker duo of Connor Allison and Aaron Peterson. Krowitz teamed with Michael Rooney and cruise to an 8-2 win in the second doubles slot, while Russell and Jeff Mason edged Thomas Nourie and Francis Musick 8-5 as MCLA swept the opening three points.
 
In singles, Becker's Peterson narrowly defeated Goldsmith 7-6, 6-4 in the top singles slot, however Wabshinak came through again in the second singles matches defeating Thomas Lanphear 6-0, 6-1.
 
Krowitz cruised past Brian Fradsham 6-0, 6-0 in the third slot while Russell defeated Oliver Awat 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth spot.
 
Becker's Allison and Nourie collected singles victories in the fourth and fifth singles positions, with Allison needing a third set to defeat Michael Rooney while Nourie took care of MCLA's Mason.
 
The Trailblazers are back home Sunday when they host Johnson State in NAC play beginning at 1 p.m. at the Zavattaro Athletics Complex.
 
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-4 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference foe MCLA on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. 
 
The host Bears improved to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in the MASCAC, while the visiting Trailblazers slipped to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
 
Twelve different players scored for Bridgewater State, led by three goals apiece from Marissa Yowell, Alex King and Melissa Renauld.
 
Senior midfielder Rebecca Pike and junior attack Kaitlyn Brown of Adams paced MCLA with two goals apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra David turned aside four shots in the setback.
 
The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday. The Bears entertain Westfield State University while the Trailblazers host Worcester State University at 4 p.m.
