PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program is offering free educational sessions on pre-diabetes in Pittsfield and North Adams.

The sessions are designed for those whose physician have told them their blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be considered diabetes, for people who have been told they are at risk for diabetes or who are 45 years or older and have an inactive or history of gestational diabetes.

The Pittsfield programs will be held on Monday, April 6, and Monday, April 13, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Private Dining Rooms at BMC, located near the BMC Cafe. The Pittsfield programs will be presented by Julie Shepard, registered dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator at BMC.

The North Adams programs will be held on Tuesday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 28, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Clark House at the Northern Berkshire YMCA, Brickyard Court in North Adams. Jan Salzer, a registered dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, will present the North Adams classes.

Those interested in participating should attend the two classes at whatever location they choose, and are also asked to take a brief survey that can help them determine whether they are at risk for pre-diabetes or diabetes. The survey can be printed out here.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call the BHS Diabetes Education Program at 413-395-7942 or register online through the Berkshire Health Systems website.
