.jpg) NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA Trailblazers and Regis College Pride raised the curtain on the 2014 women's soccer season with a hard fought 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
Regis tallied early in the first half, but MCLA rallied to score in the 81st minute.
Just five minutes into the contest, Regis found the back of the net when Joana Rosa corralled a loose ball at the top of the box. She turned and lofted a shot that beat Trailblazer keeper Katy Daly for an early 1-0 advantage. Neither team mounted much of an offensive for the remainder of the half.
The Trailblazers began to wear down Regis in the second half, creating multiple scoring opportunities but couldn't grab the equalizer. Janelle Stannard had a chance from close range, but Regis' Rachel Gagnon made the save to preserve the lead. MCLA kept the pressure on, though, eventually breaking through on Jackie Dwyer's goal.
After MCLA forced a corner kick, Courtney Hayer lofted a perfect ball into the box. Regis attempted to clear the ball, however it found the foot of Dwyer, who easily slipped one past Gagnon to tie the game.
Neither team mounted a serious threat in overtime.
Gagnon finished with seven saves for Regis, while her counterpart Daly registered four.
MCLA is back in action on Labor Day at 1 p.m. when it hosts Albertus Magnus at Shewcraft Field.
Tennis
The MCLA women's tennis team opened its season with a convincing 8-1 win over Becker College at the Zavattaro Athletics complex.The match was the opener for both clubs.
The Trailblazers wasted little time in taking command as they swept the opening doubles matches. MCLA continued the momentum into singles as they pulled away for the win.
The freshman tandem of Emily Deaso (Pittsfield) and Mariza Sfakianaki (Williamstown) earned an 8-2 win in doubles, before each rolled to straight set wins in singles. Deaso won her singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Also earning a pair of points was Rebecca Waterhouse and Adams' Sarah Mikutowicz. Waterhouse teamed with Ama Adwetewa-Badu to earn a hard fought 8-5 doubles point, before winning 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth singles slot. Mikutowicz earned a doubles point and swept her singles match.
Other Trailblazers earning points included Sarah Murphy and Pownal, Vt.'s, Kylie Dumas. Murphy teamed with Mikutowicz to earn her point, while Dumas won a singles match.
MCLA will be back on the courts Friday when it hosts Worcester State at 3 p.m.
Volleyball
CASTLETON, Vt. -- The visiting MCLA Trailblazers swept a season opening tri-match this afternoon as they defeated Green Mountain College, 3-0, before handling Castleton 3-1, in the nightcap.
MCLA (2-0) cruised in the opener as the won by scores of, 25-4, 25-10, and 25-11, over GMC. Samantha Anderson led the way with seven kills, while Brianne O'Rourke chipped in with six of her own. Anderson hit .700 in the opening victory.
Chenelle Enomoto collected a team best seven assists in the opener.
In the match with Castleton, the Trailblazers got off to another fast start winning the first two games, 25-11 and 25-14.
The Spartans rallied to take the third game, but MCLA closed them out with a 25-17 win to clinch the sweep.
Maggie Allen was outstanding as she notched 13 kills in 23 attacks. O'Rourke continued her solid day as she would finish with 9 kills. Anderson was also a threat as she collected seven kills in the nightcap.
Courtney Parent had a nice game finishing with 19 assists, while Enomoto chipped in with 14.
The Trailblazers will look to continue the hot start on Friday when they travel to Southern Vermont to battle the Mountaineers at 7 p.m.
Men's Soccer
NORWICH, Vt. -- The MCLA men's soccer team earned its second straight shutout as it defeated Johnson State, 2-0, this afternoon in the Norwich Cadet Classic.
MCLA (2-0) lost the tiebreaker to host Norwich for the overall title, however they were well represented on the all tournament roster. Making the team were: Kwadwo Kusi, Anthony Basile, Romeo Grey, and Anthony Bonacio, who was named the defensive MVP of the tournament.
Grey tallied the game winner on Saturday as he knocked home his second goal in two days after a feed from Tyler Callahan. His goal came in the 30th minute and MCLA held the 1-0 lead at the half.
Even though MCLA was dominating the play, Johnson (0-2) was still in the game until Basile's tally in the 73rd minute. He took a Kusi feed and beat Johnson keeper Miles Peterson for an insurmountable 2-0 advantage.
On the day, MCLA held a convincing 22-8 shot advantage and a 9-4 edge in corners.
Matt Robinson earned his second straight victory stopping three shots. Peterson collected three saves of his own in a losing effort.
MCLA is off until next weekend's CIAO Classic when it battles Curry in the opening game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Shewcraft Field.
