SteepleCats Bow Down to Schooners 3-0By Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 09:12AM / Friday, July 22, 2011
GROTON, Conn. – There was a strikeout. Then another. And another. When the dust had settled, 14 in total for the SteepleCats as they fell for the third time in four tries to the nubile Mystic Schooners’ franchise 2-0 on Thursday night.
After two days off following a dramatic 6-2 extra inning victory against the Eastern Division’s top team Newport on Monday night, the ‘Cats fell flat for the second time at Fitch Senior High School. It wasn’t for lack of trying. Actually, it was for trying too much because 11 of the 14 Ks on the scorecard were of the swinging variety. Once Mystic‘s pitchers knew they had control of the outside corner with John Degirolamo 0 Comments >> Read More |

SteepleCats win over Old Orchard Beach 7-4By Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 01:26PM / Monday, July 18, 2011
NORTH ADAMS, Mass.- It had been a rather disappointing Parents Weekend up until Sunday afternoon at Joe Wolfe Field because the SteepleCats had lost two straight in contrasting fashions.
On Friday night, the Sanford Mainers came into town and hung on to win 3-2 as the ‘Cats squandered several opportunities to take control of the game in the final three innings. The following night against Western Division leader Danbury, North Adams had lost its fourth straight game to the Westerners after a four-run top of the eighth opened up the gap to 7-2 in what was, up until that point, the most contested meeting between the teams this season. For the second time in as many weeks, Clayton Kuklick 0 Comments >> Read More |
Westerners win 4th straight against the SteepleCatsBy Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 09:22AM / Sunday, July 17, 2011
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - In the first three games against division rival Danbury, North Adams had been outscored 23-5, including Tuesday night’s 8-3 loss at Rogers Park. In that game, Frank Morris had been hammered for three runs in the seventh inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Chad Morgan and Tyler Horan.
The deep shots over the right-center field wall snapped an eight inning stretch without allowing a run for Morris, who was just another victim to the NECBL’s most dangerous offense. He had shown enough over the last three weeks to earn a start, as the SteepleCats coaching staff had recently decided to move forward with a four man starting rotation. The first three spots 0 Comments >> Read More |

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - After Wednesday night’s game against Mystic was rained out in a matter of minutes, the SteepleCats returned to Joe Wolfe Field on Friday night to start a series of weekend games at home where they lost the the Sanford Mainers .
It was the first night of Parents Weekend for the organization, which has seen its nine-year run of postseason berths threatened at various points this season. With a day off Thursday, it was time to return to work for Clayton Kuklick’s squad, which started the day 5 ½ games back of Vermont for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Division.

Westerners Muscle Past SteepleCatsBy Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 09:10AM / Wednesday, July 13, 2011
DANBURY, Conn. — The SteepleCats and the Westerners are no strangers to one another. If you were around the SteepleCats last season or followed them throughout all of 2010, I do not need to remind you of the small traces of bad blood in the water anytime the teams meet. Or in this case, sewn into the blades of grass and mixed in the dirt at both Rogers Park and Joe Wolfe Field. I’m speaking strictly in competitive terms, not at all on a personal level. For it was these same Danbury Westerners who eliminated the SteepleCats from the postseason and denied them entry to their first NECBL championship.
Many around the ballpark will tell you that last year’s SteepleCats team 0 Comments >> Read More |

SteepleCats Make it Two StraightBy Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 11:15AM / Wednesday, July 06, 2011
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — If there’s one thing SteepleCats fans have learned about freshman right-hander Brian Gilbert in the past week, it’s that the Toms River, N.J. native is a warrior. Last Tuesday night in Old Orchard Beach, Gilbert threw an eight-inning gem, holding the Raging Tide to just three hits and three walks while fanning five. The Seton Hall University product followed that up less than 72 hours later when he was called upon to close out the 10th inning with a two-run extra inning lead in Holyoke. Despite allowing a run Gilbert earned the save, and is the only SteepleCat not named Gray Carden to register a tally in that department.

SteepleCats Blank SchoonersBy Gregg Caserta, SteepleCats Info 12:59PM / Tuesday, July 05, 2011
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Four thousand, two hundred fifty-three fans walked through the gates at Joe Wolfe Field July 4 to celebrate our nation’s independence together with a baseball game. There’s nothing more American, really.
In an era when the word "winning" has become a catchphrase, it hasn’t been so easy for the SteepleCats, who started the night 6-14 and were still sitting in the basement of the Western Division. After two straight tough losses over the weekend, Monday night’s matchup with the Mystic Schooners signaled the midway point of the 2011 season. Hard to believe given that 21 games had come and gone in the blink of an eye. The usual cast of 0 Comments >> Read More |
