PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires, Inc. will host the 45th annual Gib Kittredge Hockey Tournament Friday through Monday, Jan. 15-18, at the club’s rink on 16 Melville St.   The first puck drops Friday night at 5 p.m. when the host Berkshire Bruins take on Bethlehem, N.Y., in the Squirt Division. Games continue Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The finals begin Monday at 9 a.m. The tournament also utilizes Williams College's Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown during the weekend. Admission is free.   “We are proud to again host the Kittredge Tournament," Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Chris Jacoby said.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The North Adams Little League is no more, but rather than let it go away completely, its leaders decided to take the city's youth baseball program in a different direction.   And they found a new home in Cal Ripken Baseball.   The newly formed North Adams Cal Ripken League will play its inaugural season this spring. WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Westfield State Owls placed four players in double figures led by Jill Valley's 18 points as they cruised past the MCLA Trailblazers women's basketball team 90-69 in MASCAC action in the Woodward Center.   After one quarter, the Owls (9-4, 2-0) led 26-22 but put some separation between the teams with a stong second quarter surge. WORCESTER, Mass. - In a game that featured a pair of big second half runs, Worcester State reeled off a 31-10 spurt over the final 8 minutes, 48 seconds to pull away from a stubborn MCLA men's basketball team in a 77-61 victory in the MASCAC opener for both teams.   The game was played at Clark University and the Lancers improve to 9-5 overall (1-0 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers drop to 4-8 (0-1 MASCAC).   For the Trailblazers (4-8, 0-1), Paul Maurice scored a team best 15 points off the bench on 6-13 shooting.  Ki-Shawn Monroe had his best game of his young career logging 11 points and dishing off four assists. Williams College and MCLA are planning celebrations this month in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

The Williams event will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, from noon to 3 p.m.

Girls in grades kindergarten through 6 are invited to attend and learn about volleyball, softball, lacrosse and soccer from Williams student-athletes.

  The eighth annual free event will be held at the college's Towne Field House and will be followed by a women's hockey game at 3 p.m. against NESCAC foe Bowdoin.   MCLA will hold its 26th annual NGWSD celebration on Saturday, Jan. 30.   Girls in grades 3 to 8 and women of all ages are invited to participate in free sports clinics from 8:30 a.m. to noon.   Lunch will be served free of charge for the girls; a nominal fee will charged to women for the lunch.   After lunch, attendees can take in a women's basketball game between the Trailblazers and Worcester State at 1 p.m., followed by an autograph session with the women's basketball team.   Registration is required for the MCLA event. Players  are  needed  for  the  2016  season  of  the  Berkshire Adult Baseball League.   The BABL offers competiton in a 20-and-over league and a 35-and-over league.   Players  of  all  experience  levels  are  welcome.  Teams  cover all of Berkshire County from Great Barrington to North Adams and play on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Occasionally, games are scheduled for Wednesday evenings.   Local fields are used as well as seasoned umpires.   The season runs from May 15 to August.   All ages are welcome.   For more information on teams in either league call

TROY, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team went on a 26-0 run early in the second half en route to a 106-44 win over Mass College of Liberal Arts on Saturday in the first round of the Tri-State Shootout, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.   The Mountaineers improved to 6-2 and advanced to play the host Engineers in the championship game on Sunday. MCLA fell to 2-7 and faces Vermont Tech on Sunday in the consolation game.   SVC led 41-19 at halftime, but the Trailblazers scored 10 of the first 13 points of the second half, forcing the Mountaineers to call a timeout. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The MCLA women's basketball team extended its program best winning streak to seven games after defeating non-conference foe Mount Holyoke, 68-37, on Wednesday in the Amsler Campus Center Gym.    MCLA (7-2) was led by Courtney McLaughlin who ended with a game high 17 points and 4 steals. She was joined in double figures by Courtney Pingelski with 11 points and Kayla Hotaling with 10.  Hotaling snagged a team high 9 rebounds.   The Lyons (0-9) were paced by Genelle Green's team-high 11 points. She added eight caroms.   MCLA forced a season high 33 turnovers in the win and shot 38 percent. The Trailblazers attempted 34 more field goals

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- the MCLA women's basketball team Saturday held off the visiting Simmons College Sharks for a 53-43 win at the Amsler Campus Center.     The win marked the sixth straight for MCLA (6-2), however the home team had to hold on down the stretch after leading by as many as 26 points in the third quarter.   MCLA led comfortably 36-15 at the half, and rebounded after Simmons made a run out of the locker room to lead 48-22 with 3:52 left in the third quarter.
