NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dr. Manuel Finkelstein, 90, of North Adams, MA, died Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Williamstown Commons.
He was born in Scranton, PA, on October 18, 1928 son of David and Minnie (Miller) Finkelstein. He graduated from Central High School and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Scranton. Manuel received his Master's Degree from Williams College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He was a Fulbright Scholar and did his post-doctoral studies in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Manuel was employed as a research chemist at Sprague Electric Co. for 30 years and also taught organic chemistry labs at Williams College for many years. He was a longtime volunteer at Mass MoCA, the North Adams Tourist Booth and the North Adams Historical Society. Manuel enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and stamp collecting.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Wood) Finkelstein whom he married on June 13, 1957 and two sons- Daniel Finkelstein of Troy, MI and Andrew Finkelstein of North Adams. He also leaves several nieces and one nephew. His son, Joseph Finkelstein died in 1965 and his brother Herman Finkelstein and sister, Gertrude Finkelstein are deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Dr. Manuel Finkelstein are private. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
