Angela M. Shartrand, 48

June 26, 2017

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Angela Marie Shartrand, of Florence, died in her home, Monday, June 26, 2017, at the age of 48.

Born in North Adams on April 16, 1969, daughter of Nancy Galli Shartrand of North Adams and the late Edward Shartrand, she attended public schools in North Adams prior to graduating from Williams College. She received a master's of education degree from Harvard University and a doctorate in applied developmental and educational psychology from Boston College.

She married Scott Andrew in Williamstown on July 19, 1997, and they resided in Florence since August 2002. They were blessed with two children, Noah (17) and Naomi (14) Andrew.

Angela began her professional career as a research coordinator at the Harvard Family Research Project in Cambridge, and, until her cancer diagnosis in 2015, was the director of research and evaluation at VentureWell Inc. in Hadley. During her career, she authored and co-authored white papers and academic articles on topics ranging from family support programs to engineering and entrepreneurial programs in higher education.

After being diagnosed with de novo metastatic, triple-negative breast cancer in her liver in September 2015, she became an avid cancer researcher and activist. Among other organizations, she became involved with the Broad Institute, which focuses on genomic research to cure disease, and MET UP, a metastatic breast cancer activist organization. She communicated with cancer patients, researchers and activists around the country and participated in conferences, die-ins and lobbying from Washington, D.C., to San Antonio, Texas.

Even more important to Angela than her research and activism was her family. Always one to enjoy simple pleasures in life, she loved rallying Scott, Noah and Naomi to bake Easter bread, play family games, and help her with newly selected recipes. She bravely insisted the family take their first vacations outside the continental United States while she was receiving chemotherapy.

Angela will be remembered as an intelligent, calm and humble person who had a quiet wisdom, warm heart and authentic way about her that drew people to her and made her a wonderful wife and mother, trusted friend and respected colleague.

Besides her mother, husband and children, she leaves a great-uncle, William Pasotti;  her uncles Alfred Galli, William "Billy" Galli, and Paul Shartrand and his wife, Sandy; aunts Carol "Rose" Galli Massaconi and her husband, Mitchell, Christine Spencer Shartrand; four cousins; her father-in-law, Dennis Andrew and his wife, Linda; her mother-in-law, Maureen Ryan and her husband, Paul; brothers-in-law Todd Andrew and Matthew Andrew; and nephew Tucker Andrew and niece MacKenzie Andrew.

She also was predeceased by her uncles Joseph Shartrand and John Shartrand.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Memorial Service to celebrate Angela's life will be held at the Log Cabin at 500 Easthampton Road in Holyoke on Tuesday, July 11, from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to MET UP, PO Box 4251, San Leandro, CA 94579.
